Lil Miss Pepper finally got to join the rest of the herd for her first foray into the big yard to graze and eat the brush and loved it! The chickens crack me up with their random hiding spots around the yard, the birdbath is a big favorite as are the galvanized planters (sadly did not grab a picture of it last week), and boy are the chicks getting huge and they’re only a month old (well only one for sure we know is Lil Bit since we hatched him/her). Oh and we noticed that not only is Uno getting darker (dark tan in some areas) in spots but we noticed that Djali has really light tan spots.

I can’t believe I almost forgot to post about this guy!! He’s the absolute best farm pup! He loves being in the big yard and feels like he always has to supervise all the goings on. He doesn’t bother the big chickens at all and adores the chicks. He will frequently go and check on the chicks throughout the day and makes sure they’re ok (even slept in the room with them during a storm last Saturday while we were out). He doesn’t mess with them at all, well aside from giving two of them kisses while Ryan and I were holding them. For the most part he ignores the goats, except he gets anxious and wants to stop them when they’re playing and roughhousing.

Now to the goaties! When they say goats are escape artists they aren’t kidding!!! The entire crew (this was before Pepper) went to visit the cattle at our neighbors and got to meet their horses too! Of course a few weeks later Bob was caught where he doesn’t belong 🤣 and Stew managed to escape their pen a few times into the big yard and earned himself a full Government name. When he’s being naughty he gets referred to as Stewart Harold McAvaddy (after Harry Houdini). They love getting to go into the big yard and eat brush, grass and fallen leaves to their hearts content! We’ve had lil Miss Pepper for just over a month now. Sadly her introduction into the herd was delayed by 2 weeks as she developed a wicked case of pink eye that had to be treated. Once we realized what was going on we began treatment with a pink eye spray until she was able to get into the Vet’s office and was started with a very strong round of antibiotics. She is not a fan of the Vet’s and was quite dramatic about it, but if I had to get my face shaved and was given shots on my face and around my eyes (I originally thought Ryan said she was given shots in her eyes 🤦🏼‍♀️🫣) I don’t blame her. We then had to give her daily injections for another week which worked like a charm because within days her eyes were clearing up and was given a clean bill of health on her follow up appointment this past Monday. She also got to spend sometime (and also had a sleepover) in our screened in porch because of some wicked storms that came through. Today we finally got to “properly” introduce her into the herd and everything went amazingly! We were so happy to finally do the introduction because she wanted to be with them so badly (when the others would be out grazing she’d cry when they weren’t in her line of vision) and are even happier that she was accepted so easily.

Sorry we haven’t posted in a minute! But we’re about to correct that with some updates. Let’s start with the chicks and chickens. Thankfully I went a little chick crazy at Tractor Supply as only one of the eggs hatched. The babies are getting so big and their grown up feathers are starting to come in. The pictures are the progression from day one up to today. The grown up chickens are doing great, sadly we did have our first casualty to a predator (most likely a raccoon) and lost Cruella.

This boy!! The first baby born on the farm is 6 months old (a few days late because hatching of a baby chick and the purchase of more chicks)! Uno is a love muffin who loves all the scratches and is a big fan of treats! He is officially bigger than his Mama and almost as big as his “uncles” Bob and Stew.

Chicken Math really is real! In my defense this was a husband approved and sanctioned purchase and I went well below the limit I was given, Tractor Supply got me good! 6 Sapphire Gems and 6 Rhode Island Reds. Both Ryan and I got to hold and cuddle Lil Bit (name pending) before moving him/her into the brooder with the others. Baron is the best chicken guard and has already checked on them a few times.

Lil bit not only will be getting moved into a bigger spot but they will be getting some friends from Tractor Supply to keep them company until the others hatch.

Well it looks like our second attempt at hatching chicks seems to be working! Ryan went to check the temp and humidity of the incubator this morning and was greeted by a little chirp! We officially have a new baby that was born on the farm!

Oops we did it again, actually this was Ryan’s doing as I wasn’t looking when I heard him say “awww” and then “ahhh hell” and next thing I knew he bid on a sweet baby girl and won her at auction. He’ll say it was my fault but that’s not accurate, this was all him. Say hello to Pepper, the newest addition to the farm.
