Dr. Robert Danka, Research Leader of the Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics and Physiology Research Unit in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, will retire today, after nearly 36 years of service! His research includes practical application of honey bee biology, such as pollination of crops (apples, blueberries, cotton and soybeans), the biology and management of Africanized honey bees, and genetic resistance traits of honey bees.
Dr. Danka has been instrumental in working to increase adoption of ARS’s scientific discoveries of genetically based resistance to Varroa mites. From investigations to discover and characterize mechanisms of resistance, breeding to enhance and maintain mite resistance and other desirable traits in bees, and working to make these practical solutions available to U.S. beekeepers. PAm is especially glad to have many years of Danka’s collaboration on the Hilo Bee project.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Danka for his many contributions to our industry as we wish him well in retirement.
