Topics will include:
Why start a community garden, and who should be involved?
Dollars: funding, budgeting, and sustainability
The rules: zoning, liability protection, and by-laws
The big picture: siting (sun, water, grade, access,
Site preparation (bed design, soil testing, and amendment, infrastructure)
Plant selection and installation
Maintenance: fertilization, pest, and disease management.

ADAI, The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are offering a FREE workshop November 1-2, 2022 to provide growers information and tools necessary to develop an effective cleaning and sanitizing program for your farm. The training will cover best practices of cleaning and sanitizing within the context of the Produce Safety Rule with insights from ADAI, ACES, and FDA. It will include an overview of the Produce Safety Rule and guidance to understand current regulatory requirements associated with cleaning and sanitizing for covered produce on covered farms. A complimentary lunch will be provided both days.

Operation Grow: Cultivating Strong Farming Practices for America’s Heroes - Alabama Cooperative Extension System
In an effort to give back to individuals who have given so much, Operation Grow is a project to help train and support veterans in agriculture.
Is there anything better than tomatoes during the summer? Tomatoes are a great source of vitamin a (eyes, immune health, heart, lungs, kidney function), vitamin c (immune health, iron absorption, wound healing), and antioxidants (healthy skin, brain health, anti-inflammatory). Check out our basil, tomato, and peach salad for the perfect summer snack!
4 ripe, but firm peaches, cut into 8 wedges
4 ripe, but firm tomatoes, cut into 8 wedges
8 large basil leaves, cut into thin ribbon strips
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
1. Place peaches and tomatoes in a serving bowl.
2. Drizzle with lemon juice, honey, and oil.
3. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste and gently mix to combine.
4. Add basil ribbons and serve immediately.
Add soft cheese, such as goat, cotija or feta.
Serve on toast or with yogurt or cottage cheese.
