Lura-Fran Sweeties

Lura-Fran Sweeties Lura-Fran Sweeties is a small-batch pies & cobblers business comprised of old Southern-inspired and Yankee recipes like her grandmothers would make.

Lura-Fran Sweeties is inspired by Laura's deceased grandmothers, Lura Belle & Frances. She delights in the fact that her own names were chosen in reflection of theirs, i.e. Laura Frances. These amazing women were both great cooks and bakers. Laura makes pies, cobblers, handpies, and other sugary delights inspired by Southern cooking and baking. She gets a lot of her inspiration from Chef Vivian Ho

ward of the PBS documentary A Chef's Life. All baked goods are made from scratch with quality ingredients (many of them organic) in her own home kitchen. She began selling at the West Homewood Farmers Market on June 7, and can now be found at the West Homewood Farmers Market every other Tuesday evening and the Lee Branch Farmers Market every other Saturday morning. This is a small hobby business incorporated in Laura's spare time. If you have any questions or request, please contact her. She will be glad to do business with you!

Did you know that Lura Wise is one of the inspirations for this business name and concept?

Lura Belle Wise of Barbour County is my paternal grandmother and was the wife of Bill Wise and the mother of 6 children.

Lura worked on their farm in Baker Hill, AL and loved to fish and play the guitar. If she was still alive, she would have been the inspiration for bottled water and probably a lot of other things. When I was a child, she was famous for carrying around a thermos of water with a cup and cloth for hot days.

She made the best creamed corn and fried cornbread that I have ever known and was a great source of wisdom that I wish I had known better. My dad could tell you a lot more about her than I could, since she passed away when I was almost 7 years old.

I wish she was still around to show me the ways of Southern cooking and farming.
