Altitude Adjustments by Annie Walker explores the emotional and psychological transformation that comes from living in prolonged solitude within California’s High Sierra. Created during summers spent living and working in Yosemite’s backcountry, with a permanent residence in South Lake Tahoe the rest of the year, this body of work reflects a personal healing journey. It considers what happens when isolation strips life down to its rawest form; when there is nowhere to hide, and one is forced to sit with the uncomfortable self.
Through heavily textured, UV-reactive paintings, Annie captures the tension between beauty and danger, familiarity and surrealism—reflecting a personal journey through grief, healing, and self-confrontation.
Altitude Adjustments is both a love letter to the High Sierra and a record of what it means to be changed by it: to be broken open by wilderness, rebuilt in isolation, and remade through the act of surviving yourself. Artifacts of survival, adaptation, and reinvention.
Born in Pennsylvania and raised and studied in New Orleans, Annie Walker is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, mural work, and sculpture. After beginning her career in New Orleans, she relocated to San Francisco in 2015 and became an active presence in the Bay Area community through gallery exhibitions, public murals, and art markets. She now lives and works in South Lake Tahoe, California.
Altitude Adjustments, along with additional works by Annie, is on display at Mountain Rambler Brewery through August 31st.
