Montgomery Creek Ranch - Grass Fed Beef

Montgomery Creek Ranch - Grass Fed Beef Montgomery Creek Ranch Grass Fed Beef is an Eastern Sierra Local producer and purveyor of quality grass fed beef directly to local beef connoisseurs.

Founded in 2009, Montgomery Creek Ranch Grass Fed Beef began as a project to help fulfill a strong desire for locally grown grass fed beef. We strive to produce high quality, wholesome, and delicious beef utilizing local resources. Our cattle are fed on grasses native to the High Sierra, and alfalfa grown on the Montgomery Creek Ranch, meaning our beef has a flavor that is not only delicious, but

truly embodies the character of the area. Montgomery Creek Ranch only offers beef for purchase in the Eastern Sierra region, and as such you will only find our products in select fine local retailers, restaurants, and on a direct purchase basis. For direct purchase we offer full, half, or quarter (an equitable split of the cuts in a half) beef. Whatever your freezer size, we can help fill it! We also strive to connect local consumers with the agricultural processes that are involved in the production of the grass fed beef that they enjoy. We welcome answering questions about our beef production process and methods. Please do not hesitate to contact us and for more information or updates on beef availability, please send us an email at [email protected] expressing your interest. Also, keep an eye out for availability updates and specials that appear here on our page! Thank you for your support of local foods and local grass fed beef!

A day of hauling MCR cattle in 25 seconds! Turn the sound up to hear some Moooos. Cattle are officially on their summer pastures and thriving on green grass. Thanks for following along!

First hay field of the 2026 season is baled! I had to capture this special moment with Jake and the kids. They paused for a picture before Liam said it best “C’mon farmers, we have more work to do” and they all loaded back into the tractor to pick up a few scraps and re-bale a broken bale.

In between cattle checks and selling beef there’s lots of tractor time - the busiest time of year is officially here!

Thanks for following along. Love the Doonans!

We were inspired to make this after our long gather a few weeks ago. There are always some thoughts about the sky, grass, or other wildlife. Many about specific cows or calves, it’s so nice to see them up close again! Lots of worries about them darting off in the opposite direction from where we need - probably from our wild cattle days, but there’s still always a few wild ones in the herd to worry about. And always gratitude for their ability to thrive in this desert environment.

We gathered cows off summer pasture last week and were surprised to find this little calf! We calve in the spring and this little feller had a long walk ahead of him. We took it very slow, allowing him time to nurse and rest if needed. He made the 6 mile walk and is thriving today! It took me about 4 miles of trailing behind to remember that our bulls escaped and got in with the cows for a few hours last year. At least we know they get their job done! So far there aren’t any other new baby calves.

We named him Champ short for his champion way of walking the far distance. The kids have since suggested Burrito and Watermelon.

Hi everyone! We took a break from social media to start fall cattle work and finish hay season. The days are still very long for us and media communication is always the first to go when we are fully involved in the work. We are so very grateful to notice an increased interest despite our absence! We figured we would share a glimpse of our summer:
- Farming alfalfa hay, we finish our grass fed steers on homegrown alfalfa. Here we have Jake baling hay and fixing the irrigation.
- Ranching, we have mother cows, calves and steers. We ride to check on them and do all health checks. You’ll see a lot of this here.
- Selling beef, this summer we started attending markets in Bishop and Mammoth. We also sell beef in Manor Market and Mahogany Smoked Meats. And we of course drop off beef direct to you! Check our website for drop off locations.
Thanks for following along!

First (official) day of farming the 2025 season for our fam! 🌾🚜

Jake’s family has been farming for multiple generations and specifically in the Owens valley for nearly 6 decades. It is the experience of growing crops starting at such an early age that sparked the creativity of raising cattle to finish with hay scraps and ultimately keep some of the hay local. We have developed these fields in such a way that they grow a healthy crop during the spring and summer months, and provide a nutritious feed (and space) for our cattle during the winter. There are several steps involved in growing, curing, and baling the hay - we are lucky enough to have a family that works together through it all and welcomes the youngest generation to join in whatever capacity they feel. Today it ended with collecting ladybugs! This is just another aspect of our family operation that is integral to our cattle and we are excited to share during the next few months.

Almost captured! Check out the similarity of the cow calf pair in these photos and our full logo. The artist who drew up our logo captured our cows and this special area so well. We love this little pair and also shared a photo of the day she was born in March. We will have stickers available at ESLT’s Garden fest this Saturday!

A favorite event from April was the open house! It was fun to see familiar faces and meet many new people. The community support for locally raised food was phenomenal. We enjoyed sharing our story, homemade beef jerky, and our 2025 beef calf mascot: Jeff who has since been renamed to Boss’em since he’s being raised by Blossom (our milk cow) and his strong stature certainly makes it an appropriate fit.

This photo has been circulating around local news stories and we figured it deserved a spot on here too.

Thank you to Blue Heron Farm for having us and Gayla Wolf and The Sheet for the photo.
