98.6% of American pigs never go outside. Ours never go inside.

That number is the Sentience Institute’s read of the USDA Census of Agriculture, updated last November. 1.4% of pigs in this country are raised outside that system. Ours are in the 1.4% — raised outdoors on grass. Pasture and shaded forest in the summer, and warm hay beds in winter.

They’re Duroc and Berkshire. They eat forbs, prairie grass, pecans, walnuts and whatever they dig up. Corn and soy free, which is less a diet we put them on than one they’d pick for themselves.

We raise them on our own ranch and buy from two other local families who do it the same old way.
