The real reason REP Provisions won’t sell imported beef from Argentina or anywhere else. We were founded on the idea of regenerating American grasslands. You have to manage Animals on American land to regenerate it. Buying beef from overseas would certainly make us more profitable but it would do nothing to help us achieve that goal. We will always be Product of USA.

Everyone’s talking about expanding the U.S. cattle herd. But here’s the question nobody’s asking: could we, even if we wanted to?

Fifty years of tillage, chemical inputs, and continuous grazing have left a lot of our soils thinner and less resilient than they used to be. Add in millions of acres of native prairie converted to subsidized monocrops, paved over for urban sprawl, or now being bought up for data centers, and the grassland base that used to support a bigger herd just isn’t what it was.

You can’t grow more cattle on soil that can’t grow more grass.

Regenerative agriculture isn’t a buzzword here. It’s the actual path back. Rebuild the soil biology, restore the water cycle, get perennial grasses thriving again, and the land can carry more animals than it can today. Herd expansion starts underground, not in the sale barn.

Regeneration happens when we stop asking one animal to do all the work.

Cattle, sheep, and goats don’t graze a pasture the same way and that’s exactly the point.

Cattle tend to prefer a diet closer to 75% grasses and 25% forbs, putting more grazing pressure on the grasses.

Sheep will consume a diet closer to 50% grasses and 50% forbs, utilizing plants cattle pass over.

Goats add another layer, readily browsing weeds, brush, and woody plants that neither cattle nor sheep utilize as heavily.

Put them together, and suddenly we’re not managing a pasture for a single species we are managing diversity that adds multiple incomes to the ranch. We’re using different animals to harvest different parts of the plant community. That complementary grazing helps prevent any one group of plants from dominating, and gives grasses and forbs opportunities to flourish together.

Sheep and goats can make better cow pastures. Cows can make better sheep and goat pastures.

That’s one of the beautiful things about a multispecies ranch:

The animals aren’t competing against regeneration. They’re working together to create it.

Healthy grasslands weren’t built around a single grazing species. Why should our ranches be?

Fire has always been part of the prairie.

For thousands of years, fire moved through grasslands naturally, clearing old growth, returning nutrients to the soil, and creating the conditions for new life.

Then we tamed the prairie, we tamed the fire.

Prescribed fire is one way we can begin to restore that natural rhythm. By using fire intentionally, we’re mimicking a process that grasslands evolved with and giving the land a chance to reset, regenerate, and respond.

Tall thistle gets a bad rap in cattle country.

It’s a native plant, cows generally won’t eat it, and most ranchers don’t exactly celebrate when they see it show up in a pasture. But we’ve learned to look at things a little differently.

Tall thistle rarely takes over our pastures. Instead, we typically find it in small, localized pockets and when it blooms, it becomes an incredible resource for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

On a regenerative ranch, not every plant has to feed a cow to have value.

Tall thistle adds diversity above and below the soil, provides an important food source for pollinators, and this time of year adds some pretty incredible beauty to the landscape.

We don’t manage our ranch to eliminate everything cattle don’t eat. We manage for a healthy, diverse ecosystem and sometimes that means learning to appreciate a plant we were once taught to hate.
