Today I went back to the Ninebark bushes I collected seeds from last fall. They are mostly setting seed now, but I found one single flower cluster amongst them to illustrate the gorgeous phases of this unusual species!
I will have seedlings in the Boatload of Plants later this month.

New England asters can sometimes grow taller than I want in the formal parts of my gardens.
“Chelsea chopping”, or cutting back stems by 1/3 to 1/2 is a good way to control height, & encourage bushier growth.
For late summer & fall blooming perennials this can be done any time before ~ July 4. (If you see flower buds, it is too late)
As an added bonus the cut stems, stripped of lower leaves, will put out roots if left in water for a couple weeks!
Happy gardening!

Spotted bee balm (M. punctata)
AVAILABLE NOW in the Boatload of Plants, Turnpike Rd., Black Brook NY!
These striking, nectar rich plants thrive in dry/sandy/well drained soils, in full to part sun.
At ~2 feet tall, these compact stunners will add depth, texture, and life to your landscape.
Unusually, Spotted bee balm DOES tend to bloom in its first year!
So excited to offer Monarda punctata this year, grown from seeds generously shared by passionate Native Flower Farm customer, & Master Gardener Beverly!
