You want to grow mushrooms but you do not want to gamble or be guessing on what to do.

That is frustrating. We have been there.

When we started transitioning from vegetables to year round mushroom production, there weren’t as many producers or resources available. So we had to tested and experiment with everything. Wild specimens. Commercial strains. Different substrates. Different environments.

Most varieties did not make the cut.

The ones you see here did. Buy yours today; linked in Bio.

These are farm tested, high yielding strains that we actually run in our own production.

Chestnut that clusters heavy.

Oysters that flush hard.

Lion’s Mane that fruits dense and clean.

If you want to grow for fun, for food, or for farm income, you need genetics that perform.

We have already done the trial and error so you do not have to.

Den Hill is hiring a sales associate market helper in Roanoke, Virginia for the Grandin Local Environmental Agriculture Project - LEAP market. We need someone that is available most, if not all, Saturdays through thanksgiving or maybe longer. We are not from the Roanoke area and so you would be meeting my manager at market at 7am to setup and work market 8-12 then breakdown and be done by 1pm. Someone that’s into cooking, the sustainable slow food movement and likes customer service would be ideal.
Selling mushrooms and kombucha has a huge educational component involved since most consumers are not familiar with our products. Providing customers with fun and easy options to use our offerings can be repetitive but also rewarding. This is a rain or shine job and someone that is willing to show up regardless of inclement weather is required.
This job will be somewhere around minimum wage depending on your experience and background plus, you can trade with other vendors or take leftovers after market. Please DM us your résumé and why you think you would be good fit for this job. We are trying to hire this position ASAP!

It's time again to sign up for our Farm Share Card program! Similar to a CSA, you save money on our products by paying up front, and then use your card as you wish throughout the season to get the exact produce you want each week. You can use it to preorder from our website (Blacksburg pickup only), or bring it with you to any of our Farmers Market locations (Blacksburg Farmers Market, Salem Farmers Market, Local Environmental Agriculture Project - LEAP) to pay for your groceries at a discount! This program provides us with invaluable funding to get our season rolling and be able to grow amazing food for our community all year long. With your funding we will help: pay employees when cash flow is low, put a new roof on our processing and packing area, buy a new market van, purchase seeds and tons of other supplies. Feel free to DM us with any questions!

Our Story

Ben Harder and his team at Den Hill Permaculture strive to not only provide sustainably grown traditional produce and fruit, but also to bring an unusual mix of specialty crops to Blacksburg residents. Some of the crowd favorites include, chemical free raspberries, baby leaf salad greens, shiitake and oyster mushrooms, cherry and grape tomato varieties, purple potatoes, specialty peppers, beans, and more! Ben and the crew also brew kombucha with local fruit and ingredients under their new subsidiary, Tea Beast Kombucha. They use herbs from their farm like holy basil (Tulsi), lavender, lemon balm, chamomile, rose and more to create the delicious and nourishing health drink. Some popular flavors include Ginger Spice Peach, Hibiscus Lemonade, Honey Hops and Turmeric Lime.

Ben and his wife, Jackie, are also working together to combine their love of foraging, farming and herbalism to create botanical skin care, essential oil candles and homegrown tea offerings. All of the products they create feature wild harvested and homegrown medicinal plants, found under a second subsidiary they call Seeing Stone Botanicals.

As a native of Blacksburg, Ben started Den Hill Permaculture with Jackie in 2012 as he worked on completing his degree in Environmental Horticulture and Civic Agriculture from Virginia Tech. His farm is founded on the principles of permaculture, which is a sustainable ecological design system with a philosophy of working with, rather than against, nature. Ben has taken many ideas and techniques from permaculture practices and is applying them to a farm scale.
