We had a great day at yesterday! It was so good catching up with our market friends! We will be back at the market on June 6th, and will open our honor farm store around Memorial Day

A few scenes from the garden and greenhouse ๐ŸŒฟ
Growing is definitely a labor of love, you need a generous dose of optimism and a whole lotta stubbornness. Every season brings new challenges and drought has been the issue so far this season. Weโ€™ve already had to replace two collapsed irrigation wells! If you are new to growing donโ€™t give up! We are here to help ๐ŸŒฟ

See you tomorrow at Richmond Hill Farmers Market! We will have vegetables & plant starts๐ŸŒฟ

While much has been written about the impact that the war in Iran is having on oil and gas prices, it is highly likely that food prices will also climb. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global shipping route for urea, a key ingredient in nitrogen fertilizer. Some estimates note that one third of the world's fertilizer travels through that Strait. With the waterway now blocked, supplies are tightening fast.

Prices for fertilizer are likely to rise and may be difficult to obtain, putting considerable stress on our food supply chain and resulting in higher food prices.

We have been challenged with supply chain issues before, most recently during the pandemic. These kinds of interruptions are a reminder of the value of local farmers, local farms, and the importance of being able to ACCESS local food for our community. Please continue to support LOCAL food systems, wherever you may reside, by visiting your local farmers markets, tending to your own garden, volunteering in a local community garden or frequenting establishments who purchase from local growers. ๐Ÿ’š

Seed starting time! We like to use soil blocks for smaller seeds that need a good root stock before transplanting, like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and flowers ๐ŸŒฟ

๐ŸŒบWho is ready for Spring? ๐ŸŒบ
This is snail vine! One of our favorite plants on our farm. We bought seeds from a few years ago. I got one seed to germinate and he grew like crazy! We named him Thomas Jefferson because Thomas Jefferson grew snail vines at Monticello.
Unfortunately, we had a snow storm and we tragically lost TJ. But, I saved seeds pods from him and now we have Thomas Jefferson JR and Martha.
We saved seed pods again this year. The seed pods are spiraled and will shoot the seeds out like a spring ๐Ÿ˜‚ They are the prettiest, best smelling plant! But beware, aunts and wasps like them too. They grow best in warmer climates. We are in South GA, zone 8b

Wreaths ๐Ÿƒ
Since ancient times, wreaths have symbolized the wheel of life and a circle of hope.
Each person according to season or phase of life, will find themselves at the top of the wheel โฐ(12:00, spring/birth), making the rounds (3:00 summer/ renewal), at the bottom (6:00 autumn/decline) or struggling back toward the top (9:00 winter/death/regeneration).
Taking a walk, gathering botanicals from the winter landscape, and making a wreath, all become part of a meditation on the season. As we create and appreciate this labor of love, a wreath becomes a reminder that no matter where we are in the seasons and cycles of our lives, we will always continue to cycle through the good, the bad, the ups, and downs, youth and aging, life and death.
A linear path merely takes us from beginning to end, but the wheel of life symbolized in a wreath, reminds us that we are always most vital, engaged and alive when we accept our current phase, create forward movement, and celebrate the season at hand.
Perhaps this year, instead of arguing about politics, or getting trapped in a frantic rush to buy gifts and decorations, take a walk in nature with family and friends. Make your own wreaths from the special things you gather and renew this ancient holiday tradition designed to engage us in the spirit of the season.
