Today sucked. Like, really sucked. It’s the mondayest Monday if there ever were one.

We had to euthanize Reginald. Our sweet Jersey calf.

Remember him? Our cow, Matilda had a premature calf that sadly didn’t make it. So, we bought Reggie and grafted him to Matilda.

He was the sweetest boy.

We went out and found him, unable to walk on his back leg, he somehow managed to cut the front side of his leg to the bone. Severing the tendon and more completely. One of our vets came out to see if there was anything that could be done even though we knew the likelihood was slim. Unfortunately, we were right.

You see, that tendon (extensor tendon) is what helps them to pull their hoof forward to keep them from knuckling when they walk.

Surgery + splinting just wasn’t an option, the damage was so severe and he weighed too much. At the end of the day, he was suffering. There was nothing we could do to where there was any quality of life.

We’re so sorry Reggie.

Curve balls like this get thrown and it’s just a huge punch to the gut, but tomorrow we’ll wake up and try again. Farming sucks sometimes, but this is sadly part of it. We love our cows and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

ATTENTION ALL FARMERS!!!

Question! Has anyone tried using ā€œFly Predatorsā€ to help with fly control around high livestock traffic areas? Such as around water troughs, manure piles, barnyards, etc?

We’re honestly debating giving it a go since they naturally die in the winter and don’t overpopulate to become an issue. They are native but limited.

We spray our cows with fly spray whenever needed but it sure would be nice to work the problem from both ends.

All advice is welcomed!

We do not own sheep… well.. didn’t.

As Jeremy Clarkson says- WE HAVE SHEEPS!

This is a trial run, as Charlie and I both have always wanted sheep but goats were more practical at the time for brush control.

They’ll be in a quarantine pen for a few weeks to make sure they’re healthy and don’t have anything that could be spread to our other livestock. Once they are cleared- they will go out to graze spots that the cows can’t graze and isn’t brushy enough for the goats to do their job.

Welcome to the farm, boys!

I promise you we pull over every safe opportunity we get. You may see a wide spot and get mad because we didn’t use it. Why didn’t we? Because it’s a spot where we can’t angle ourselves to see traffic when pulling back onto the road which means it’s not a safe spot to let those around who are behind us. I promise you we aren’t trying to make you late, we don’t get enjoyment from going slowly down the road. Quite honestly, we hate taking tractors on the road because we know there is a chance we won’t make it home due to people passing us recklessly. Farmers have lost lives. Please be patient, we promise to let you around whenever possible.

🚜🌾 Traffic Safety Reminder 🌾🚜
As planting and harvest seasons continue, you may encounter slow-moving farm equipment on Blairstown roadways. Please be patient, stay alert, and only pass when it is safe and legal to do so. Let's work together to keep our roads safe for everyone.

Remember Dublin? Well, she is now a mama to a unique heifer calf she had yesterday! Guys- genetics are WILD. 🤯

I could get into the whole genetics lesson on how this happens but I don’t think you feel like reading a book 🫣 at the end of the day- I’ll take an overmarked calf over an under-marked calf (if I have a choice) any day!

We can’t wait to see this little lady grow! We figure that her mama is Dublin, so it’s only fitting that she be named Dallas!
