Winter is coming! October has been our busiest month of the year. We’re exhausted from the hustle and bustle of the summer and in last push mode to get everything ready for winter.
Sometimes when things get busy the farm chores and responsibilities fall out of balance. Certainly the house cleaning falls to the bottom of the priority list when crates of vegetable are stacked and waiting for processing.
We’ve been dealing with some unprecedented egg shortages from our ladies. It’s a modern day farm mystery that needed to be solved. We had run into some issues with a “good deal” we found on feed back in March. It was easy to determine that the timing of the initial issue was aligned with the new feed and we were dealing with nutritional deficiencies. Eliminating the new feed coincided with all the fresh sprouts that spring had to offer and we were back on track. All was well during summer.
Several weeks ago the issue resurfaced and with it a mystery that needed to be solved. A simple process of elimination method helped us to uncover what was right in front of our faces. El banditos…the treacherous squatter gang that had taken over our field were back for more. This time they had graduated from stealing my beloved peonies and dahlias to swiping our eggs! If only the gang from Scooby Doo were here to haul them off to jail. But the reality is that we have a serious problem on our hands. One that needs to be handled before it handles us. .
