This is the face of a spoiled guardian dog.

Serena discovered the couch is a pretty comfy spot to nap recently. She has already claimed my recliner and now she has staked her claim on a spot on the "Dog Couch". It's cheap and ugly, but my dogs, both the pets and working dogs, get all the amenities I can provide.

But why are the LGDs inside???!?!
1: Oklahoma is trying to break the record number of triple digit days. Our average high over the last 100°F with out hotest day being reported as 109°F.
2: I prefer to give my dogs a few hours inside during the heat of the day, when it hits 90 they come in. Doing this let's them stay cool and comfortable, which is helping them stay in good body condition and/or improve their body condition in Milo's case.

They go back outside before dusk to be fed and start their nightshift. When Oklahoma stops trying to cook us, then the dogs will be outside full time.

National Dog Day: The Dogs of JK Homegrown 🐕 🐾

I never thought I would be the person with this many dogs.

But I have grown, the farm has grown, and somewhere along the way the dogs became a pretty important part of how everything works around here. They all have different personalities, different jobs, and very different ideas about what a productive day looks like.

Serena is one of our livestock guardians and takes her job seriously. Before Serena, coyotes were a real threat here. Since she started working the farm, our losses to coyotes have stopped. She is independent, incredibly smart, loves her people, and genuinely wants to be outside doing her job. Although lately she has also discovered that the couch is pretty great when she's off duty.

Milo is our youngest dog and is still very playful. He can be goofy, energetic, and very much the baby of the group. But when it is time to work, he is as serious as can be. Since Milo joined the team, our losses to smaller predators have stopped too. Watching that switch flip between playful young dog and working guardian is one of my favorite things about him.

Nova is our newest addition, although she is here a little differently than the others. She has only been with us a few days and is here as a long-term foster and train. She's actually about a month older than Milo, but you would never guess that by watching them. Nova is still very much a puppy and has plenty of learning and maturing ahead of her on her path to becoming a good livestock guardian. For now, she gets to learn, grow, and be part of the farm while we help her figure things out.

Then there is Ginny, our professional couch princess.

Ginny has absolutely no interest in being a livestock guardian. Her preferred job description involves air conditioning, soft furniture, and making her opinions known. She may not protect livestock, but companionship is a job too, and she takes that one pretty seriously.

And finally, Buddy.

Buddy is the oldest dog on the farm and turns 12 this December. He has been in my life longer than any of the others, long before JK Homegrown became what it is today. He still keeps an eye on things and lets us know when someone or something is around, but his place here is bigger than any job he could perform.

I genuinely cannot imagine the world without him in it.

None of these dogs are interchangeable. Some protect livestock. Some are still learning. Some keep us company. Some have simply been beside us for so long that they are woven into the history of our lives.

I never expected to have this many dogs.

But looking at them now, I also can't imagine JK Homegrown without them.

It's grow out season, which means sorting and sexing. If sexing your grow outs is daunting, then allow me to help.

I will come out, take the samples, pack them, and get them tested. You just have to corral and catch birds.
