Our Virtual Farm Tours continue with a look at Double Eagle Dairy in Middleton, Michigan!
Owned by John and Karen Weller, Double Eagle Dairy is a multi-generational family farm working toward bringing in its fourth generation. What began with just five cows after World War II has grown into a 3,500-cow dairy and one of Michigan’s leading milk producers. Today, the farm raises nearly all of its feed on 6,000 acres of corn, alfalfa and wheat while keeping all of its cattle within the state.
Innovation has played an important role in the farm’s growth, from installing one of Michigan’s first rotary parlors in 2006 to recently adopting Afimilk rumination collars and advanced parlor technology. The farm also continues to invest in animal care and efficiency through improvements to cattle handling, sand bedding and sand separation.
Double Eagle Dairy balances its breeding program between herd replacements and a growing beef-on-dairy program, while also focusing on soil health, nutrient management and responsible manure utilization.
