I’ve been mulling over and working on this follow-up post regarding what occurred on the night of Saturday, September 12th.
For those who are new here, a quick recap: an individual or individuals trespassed and destroyed our property, ultimately resulting in letting our cattle out onto the neighboring land. And I think there was some confusion about this small detail…Whoever did this didn’t simply take the wire down and leave it behind. They actually TOOK the wire and handles WITH THEM. It was GONE.
Anyway, I digress 🤨
We were understandably irritated — and, of course, pi**ed — by the whole thing. Not to mention feeling violated on some level.
But we were also OVERWHELMED by the support.
A heartfelt THANK YOU to every single person who shared our post, left a comment, sent a kind word, or simply stood in solidarity with us 🖤
Thank you to everyone who shared our disappointment, disbelief, and frustration. It is honestly overwhelming, in the very best way, to know how many people support us — and other producers like us.
JP & I heard all week, in one way or another, that you just don’t mess with someone’s livestock. You just DON’T.
That collective feeling of “the audacity of some people” is clearly shared by a whole lot of us. We heard all week, “We are madder than hell for you guys!” That meant more than you probably realize.
I want everyone to know that we have read each and every comment and have seen how many times our post has been shared. I’m no expert on online visibility, but I do know this post has been viewed and shared more than anything else we’ve put out there, so we know others also view it as a big deal.
And we notice. We appreciate it. We are incredibly grateful.
One thing I wanted to address specifically is how many people mentioned how dangerous this could have been if a cattle-versus-vehicle situation had occurred.
I agree and have a difficult time even thinking about it. How tragic that ending could have been.
But people who commit acts like this, to be blunt, don’t give a s**t about the repercussions. They can only see far enough to serve whatever purpose they have in the moment.
That said, the comments about the cattle potentially getting out really drove something home for me: whoever did this went to a great deal of trouble.
Although it was possible, given the distance and how frequently JP checks the cattle, it was unlikely that the cattle would have made it onto the road.
The area where this poly wire was removed/taken was 900 feet from the road. That’s roughly 2½ football-field lengths.
So, again, let that sink in.
This wasn’t simply, “I’ll park my truck in the ditch, hop out, throw open the gate to let the cattle out, and hightail it out of here.”
No.
This involved walking a DISTANCE — in the dark — through field, brush, woods, and pasture.
It was risky. It was calculated. It was malicious.
So we ask again: If anyone knows anything, please contact us.
And to everyone who has commented — I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of “liking” and responding to all of them. Please know it’s not because they don’t mean a lot to us. They absolutely do.
It’s just all been so overwhelming, and we still had to “life” last week...I wasn’t feeling well, Dex ended up sick, and social media needed to take a back seat for a bit.
I did the bare minimum and wanted to wait to get this out there when I had the time, energy, and headspace to give this the attention it deserves.
But please know this:
We saw you. We felt your support. And we are incredibly, incredibly grateful for it.
Once again, thank you 🖤 Thank you for sharing. Thank you for commenting. Thank you for checking in. Thank you for being angry with us. Thank you for reminding us that there are so many good people in this world who understand what it means to care about livestock, land, and the work that goes into producing food.
I’m reminded once again that there are far more good eggs 🥚than rotten ones.
It’s just unfortunate that the rotten ones STINK SO BAD👎
And I’ll leave you with a picture taken with our new surveillance system.
While I’m EXTREMELY irritated that we had to go this route, I have to admit…it’s kinda rad being able to check out our cattle on demand. Not to mention the creepy-cool middle-of-the-night pictures we’ve been getting of deer and other wildlife.
So, peace out ✌️as we keep on keepin’ on 😉
