Hard to beat fall calving with weather like this. Another calf hit the ground today, and we’re feeling blessed watching the herd grow. A good day to be raising cattle.

The side of farming people don’t always get to see.

Four days ago, a little heifer was born, but her mother developed mastitis. Because of the pain, she kicked the calf away whenever she tried to nurse. Suddenly, we weren’t just trying to save a newborn calf—we were also helping her relearn how to suck.

We treated her mother with antibiotics and worked to flush her udder. In the meantime, Jostan and I tube-fed the calf colostrum two or three times. It took patience, persistence, and plenty of hands-on care, but eventually, she started sucking on her own again.

The kids have been excited to help feed her. These past few days have been tough, but watching her grow stronger and seeing the kids care for her has meant a lot. For now, she’ll be a bottle calf until we can graft her onto another mother.

This is the story of Jasmine.
