Thank you to the outstanding neighbor who found our boy Duke after he was scared off by a rumble of thunder this morning. He's gotten so scared lately, and it is hard to keep him in the yard at times. We'd be lost without our boy, so we are very grateful you took the time to call us and then care for him until we arrived. ❀️

We are happy to see our corn coming up! We're not sure if it will be knee-high by the 4th, but it is still a welcome sight. Most of our corn will become corn silage and a part of the TMR (Total Mixed Ration) that we feed our cows. πŸ„ TMR is a nutrient dense diet carefully balanced to be a highly digestible source of energy, protein, and fiber. Corn silage is made from chopping the entire corn plant, storing it tightly packed in our bunks and allowing it to ferment.

We provide colostrum to our calves for their first few days of life. Colostrum is the first cow's milk produced after freshening (giving birth). It is full of antibodies that help calves thrive. After colostrum the calves are given milk replacer. Milk replacer is a nutrient dense mix. The calf with no mark is still on colostrum, while the calf with the pink mark is receiving milk replacer. Watching our calves grow healthy and strong is a rewarding part of our day to day.

First hay cutting continues. We are mowing late cut grass for our heifers. Heifers are cows that have not yet had a calf. Once the mowed hay dries to the right moisture level, we will come through and chop it, transport it to the farm, and store it in our bunks.

We are out tonight spreading potash; potassium based fertilizer, onto our hay fields. This is to help replenish amounts lost from harvest. Soil that has a deficiency in potassium will produce lower yields. Potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus are the three primary nutrients needed in soil for crop production.

We are so grateful for the several sunny days in a row that allowed us to finish our corn planting. 🌽
