Let's talk about corn 🌽. Now that some of our corn has finally reached the silking stage, you will see the tassels and silks both visible. You may not know it, but corn is monoecious. That means that it contains both male and female reproductive parts on the same plant. The tassels at the top of a corn stalk are the male flower, and the ear is the female flower. The female florets contain the ovules that will become kernels after successful fertilization. The silks develop from the surface of each ovule (future kernel) on the ear. Pollination is the process whereby the pollen from the tassels is transferred to the silks by wind or insects. Fertilization occurs when the male reproductive cells from the pollen unite with the female reproductive cells of the ovule. Fertilization must occur for the ear to develop kernels.

Today, our "office" view is harvested wheat fields where we will be baling straw for bedding. After the primary grain has been harvested, the stalk is cut and baled. Once baled, the bales will be loaded on a truck and transported back to the farm. Bales can be different sizes. We bale our straw in big bales.

We are having a set of fields tiled professionally. Tiling a field keeps water from ponding and supports general drainage. Fields that have tiling installed are generally less wet, especially after heavy rains. Excess moisture can result in reduced yields and make fields harder to work. Smaller tiling criss crosses the fields, and they are tied into main lines that are larger and surround the field perimeter. The main lines drain out into the surrounding areas. The equipment being used to do this is work is incredible.

Here are some of our older calves looking to grab a bite to eat. We keep our calves in larger pens within our calf barn. The larger group environment provides for better social development. It also has been shown to help with faster growth and development. Additionally, it improves efficiency for feedings and health monitoring. We used to keep our calves in individual hutches, and while there were benefits to that as well, we chose to move to group housing several years ago, and we have been happy with the results.

Our cows rest in comfort on water beds. Each stall provides a layer of cushion via a fluid filled mattress so our cows can lie easily without pain. The mattress provides protection against pressure points and stimulates circulation. A happy, relaxed cow produces more milk, so it is a benefit for us both. 😁

As many of you know, we have bred Border Collies in the past. We've had some real beauties adopted from us over the past 40+ years. One of our past buyers has a 3 year old BC from a different breeder, and this gorgeous girl needs a new home. She's just not fitting in, and this is their last resort.

Her name is Poppy Lou, and she's house broken, crate trained, and spayed. She's a purebred BC registered with the American Kennel Club. She has nervous tendencies but does well off leash in her yard. She is good with cats and other dogs once accustomed, but slow introductions are best. She's up to date on vaccines, is microchipped, and has been through some obedience training. She'll do best with an experienced BC owner. No 1st time owners, please. A meet-up would be the best way to move forward. We are only acting to spread the word and won't be directly involved in the re-home process. Please DM us if you'd like more information.
