Smith Creek Fish Farm Full service aquatic and environmental management for lakes and ponds. Retail and wholesale fountains, aerators, pond dye and other supplies.

We are located approximately one hours drive from Buffalo or Rochester NY. Smith Creek Fish Farm has been a family owned and operated New York State certified fish hatchery since 1993. We have nine display ponds and a total of thirty-nine ponds on twenty-two acres. We carry Kasco brand fountains aerators and de-icer units from a one-quarter horse power lighted fountain for small ponds or water gardens up to seven horse power three phase units. Pond dye can be used to help enhance the beauty and clarity of any pond, lake or water garden. Pond dye also helps control green water, free floating algae and inhibits the growth of undesiriable weeds. Koi are on display for purchase from early Spring to late Fall. Our Koi are raised on premises and are available at competive hatchery direct prices. Game fish are available as soon as the ice is off the ponds. Available sizes and species vary depending on spawning times of each species. Please call for this years estimated availability schedule. We can give you a courtesy call when your desired species and size are ready for stocking. Contact us by phone or Email to get put on the 2012 list. Orders will be filled in the order they are received so call early! Water lillies, floating plants and marginals are available for aquascaping your pond, lake, or backyard garden pond. Smith Creek Fish Farm offers consulting and management services for private and public ponds and lakes as well as for golf coarses, homeowners associations and farms.

Does a pond de-icer actually heat your pond?

Not exactly! A pond de-icer isn't there to make the water warm. Its job is to help maintain a small opening in the ice during freezing weather.

Why does that matter?
Even during winter, leaves, algae, fish waste and other organic material continue decomposing. Keeping an opening in the ice allows gases produced during decomposition to escape rather than becoming trapped beneath the ice.

The K&H Thermo-Pond De-icer we carry uses just 100 watts and is designed specifically for this job.

During the fall, a few simple steps can make a big difference:
🍂 Keep as many leaves out as possible with netting
🧹 Remove accumulated debris before it settles
🦠 Use the appropriate beneficial bacteria while water temperatures allow
💨 Keep your aeration system operating appropriately for the season
🌡️ Pay attention to changing water temperatures as your fish and pond biology begin slowing down

🍂 TREATMENT TUESDAY: Don’t Feed the Muck
Those leaves that made it past the pond net? They don’t just disappear.
Leaves, dead algae, fish waste and other organic debris settle to the bottom and slowly become that layer of soft, nasty pond muck.
Fall is a great time to help reduce that organic buildup before winter.
Adding a muck-reducing bacteria treatment helps break down accumulated organic material instead of letting it sit on the bottom until spring.
For best results, apply directly to the areas where muck collects most, especially around pond edges, beneath waterfalls and in other low-flow areas.

MYTH: “A few leaves in the pond aren't going to hurt anything.”

🐟 NOT SO FAST.

A few leaves? Probably not a big deal.

But when fall really gets underway, leaves can quickly accumulate on the bottom of your pond. As that organic material breaks down, it adds nutrients and contributes to muck buildup.

And whatever settles down there this fall is still waiting for you when spring arrives. 😬

The easier solution? Stop it before it gets in.

Installing pond netting before the heavy leaf drop can save a lot of cleanup later. Keep the net supported above the water, remove accumulated leaves regularly, and don't let it sag into the pond.
