First LaMancha babies of the year! I had a suspicion this mama was going to go soon, she wasn’t swollen, she still had ligaments, all she had that told me was a firmer udder and the fact she was walking around talking to everything. Put her in the smaller outside pen to keep an eye on her. Found them within an hour but not before they got a bit chilly. Yes i am out here supervising the warming process. One buck kid and one doe kid 🙂

This is one lucky SOB. John was in the barn shortly after 1 and our last goat was fine, and she still had ligaments which let us know if they will go soon or not. Fast forward an hour and a half and our friends came to see their new babies and called me said a goat had had a baby. I ran to the barn, ran it to the house, where he got a hot water bath for 40 min before he finally started breathing more and moving and shaking. His temp is slowly coming up and he wants to stand. His poor ears were frozen together and much longer we would have lost him. I HATE kidding in this weather so much, but the babies are honestly much healthier in the long run since they have little exposure to parasites while their immune systems develop. Thanking God for Devine intervention and sending our friend here at the exact right time.

Can we please be done with the theatrics now?

It was a race this moring to see who would deliver first.

Hoshi delivered first but would have been in big trouble if I wasn’t here, the baby was UPSIDE DOWN 🤦🏼‍♀️ one of the few ways they can absoulty not deliver on their own. Why do my goats always cause problems!! With John here to hold her up I was able to easily push kid back and rotate the kid. Tulip did a good job on her own. Now only one of our Boer girls left to kid any day and our friends Boer due in a few weeks. I get a few weeks off before the dairy goats start kidding.

It’s been a busy few days! Yesterday our girl Rose gave us an easy delivery of two flashy kids, a doe and a buck. Our friends goat that is here also delivered a few hours before Rose with two buck kids. Fast forward 16 ish hours to today and we were moving the newborns out to the barn with heating barrels that have double secured heat lamps (love and hate those things!) and then brought in Big Red and Hoshi. Red delivered her single doe kid a few hours later. With fingers crossed, we gave her the bottle buckling and prayed that she would claim him as her own…and she did! So thankful to have one less thing to do 😂 Hoshi should kid in the next 12-24 hours, then we only have 2 more after her of ours, and one more of our friends goats.

PSA: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you have to use heat lamps, make sure they are secured in more than one way, so if it falls it will never reach anything that will burn. They lamps can save lives, but it can also take them.

Sometimes, farming just plain sucks, and you find yourself questioning why you torture yourself. Two nights ago we had a hard kidding for one of the Boer does. The vet was able to make it out and pull the kid, who was coming all 4 feet at the same time, which was why I could not figure out who’s legs went to whom and what the heck was going on. On top of that it was a good sized 11 lb buck kid, his brother followed more easily at 10 lbs. to make matters worse the doe was having odd seizure activity when labor started, turns out she had spiked a fever on top of probable hypocalcemia. (Which itself causes low temp) once the fever came down, she quit having the seizing episodes thankfully. By the next morning the problem kid lost a full pound and mama was rejecting the other kid. After checking the kid with significant weight loss, he was found to have a full cleft pallet (hard a soft pallet both affected.) It is never easy to euthanize an otherwise healthy looking baby, but i know it was the right choice 😞 Praying the next several girls that are due any day have healthy easy deliveries and babies. My heart could really use it.

RAW MILK REDUCES RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS AND FEVERS, SIMILAR TO BREASTFEEDING 🤧🥛💪 - A study of 983 European infants looked at consumption of raw milk, pasteurized milk, and ultra-high temperature pasteurized milk alongside occurrence of respiratory tract infections, rhinitis (runny nose), otitis (ear infections), and fever. This study was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Every week from age 8 weeks to 53 weeks, the infants’ health outcomes and dairy consumption were tracked. “The main finding of this analysis was an inverse association between consumption of unprocessed [raw] cow's milk and rhinitis, RTI [respiratory tract infection], and otitis.” There was also an inverse association between raw milk and fevers.

In layman’s terms, an “inverse association” means that as one increases, the other decreases. This study thus found that, as raw milk consumption increased, the incidence of runny nose, respiratory tract infections, fevers, and ear infections decreased. The researchers concluded that, “The protective effects of raw cow's milk on infections were comparable to those of breast-feeding, suggesting similar anti-infective properties of bovine and human milk.”
