Our recipe started on Grandma (Bobute) Genovaite Sriubaite-Setikas’ stovetop as a special drink she and Grandpa Antanas made for friends and family.

0.25 oz Beet Juice
0.5 oz Dry Vermouth
0.25 oz Lemon Juice

Shake all ingredients together with ice and strain into a coupe glass

0.25 oz Rhubarb Liqueur
0.5 oz Pomegranate Liqueur

-Shake all ingredients together with ice except rosé, strain into a rocks glass with ice

-0.5 oz Peach Schnapps
-2 oz Orange Juice
2 Dash Peach Bitters

-Shake all ingredients together with ice, then strain into a Coupe glass
-Garnish with an orange slice

Boozy Shamrock Shake:
-4 oz oat milk
-2 oz Quiver Spiced Honey Spirit
-4 Dashes of mint bitters
-0.5 oz Vanilla simple Syrup

This international women’s day, Quiver Spirits wants to pay homage to the woman who helped facilitate the world of bartending that we live in today. In 1947, Valentine Goseart employed the help of attorney Anne Davidow to sue the state of Michigan on the grounds of violation of Goseart’s constitutional rights. She was told as a woman, she can not be a “barmaid” at the establishment she came into possession of. The rule at the time, was that women were only allowed to tend bar if their fathers or husbands owned the establishment: “so as to limit the chance of nefarious or unbecoming engagements” with the men they served. Valentine’s husband did in fact own the tavern she was employed at, but when she became widowed the state came after the ownership granted to her by her late husband’s estate.

Although Valentine lost her case against the state of Michigan and the supreme court, this court case brought attention to the double standards that were continuing to happen despite the 14th amendment. Ultimately, women were granted full rights to tend bar in the United States in 1971, when the Reed vs Reed court case deemed that women can be the full recipients of estates. Without Valentine’s effort in spite of the grief of losing her husband, women’s rights in the bar industry could have been set back many more decades. In addition, her attorney Anne Davidow made history by being the first to argue that s*x discrimination is a violation of women’s constitutional rights.

Now women make up more than half of all bartenders in the US, only 50 years after they were granted their full rights to do so. Happy international women’s day!
