BEHIND THE MASTERPIECE: Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette 💀

Before Vincent van Gogh painted sunflowers and swirling night skies, he was studying anatomy in Antwerp.

This early painting began with a very traditional art-school exercise: studying the human skeleton. Van Gogh gave the subject his own twist by adding a burning cigarette between the skeleton's teeth. The result is part anatomy study, part dark humor, and a very different side of an artist we think we know.

The painting is an oil on canvas, and its dark background and strong contrast make the skull and glowing cigarette the immediate focus.

And there's one more interesting connection: Van Gogh was a smoker himself. In a letter to his brother Theo around the time this painting was created, he acknowledged that he had been smoking heavily while dealing with poor health.

So, what do you think? Would you paint Van Gogh's smoking skeleton?

🎨 A little reintroduction…

If we haven’t officially met yet, I’m Melissa, the owner and one of the artists behind Merlot And A Masterpiece! Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and while life took me in a different direction for a while, it never stopped being a big part of who I am.

In 2020, my husband Jason and I had the opportunity to take over Merlot And A Masterpiece, and we’ve loved continuing the tradition of bringing people together through creativity, connection, and fun. For me, it’s about creating a space where people can slow down, try something new, find a little peace, and enjoy the process of creating something of their own. ❤️

I’m so excited to share more of the people and stories behind Merlot And A Masterpiece through our new Behind the Brush series. 🎨🍷
