We’re enjoying our sabbatical year, but do still have a few things going at the farm. Despite the timing of our trip to Maine, which delayed our garlic harvest longer than was ideal, we still pulled quite a bit of very nice-looking bulbs. They’ll be ready to sell after curing in the barn for a while. We’re also growing the usual quantity of our favorite tomato varieties, and they’ll also be ready soon!

It’s garlic scape time! A pre-cursor to cured garlic bulbs, scapes are milder and make a great addition to that yummy omelette you have planned. Or roast or grill them whole for a scrumptious side dish. They’re also incredible pickled! Available now at the Bloomington Farm Stop Collective and Bethel Lane Farm Stop.

Hello and Happy New Year! We are writing to thank you for your strong support of New Ground Farm and the Bethel Lane Farm Stop, and to update you on some coming changes.

We have loved the connections we’ve made as we worked to help feed our community over the past decade. For that, we are truly thankful. While it is fulfilling work, it’s not easy, and Lisel and I have decided to take a sabbatical in 2024. We’re excited for the opportunity to pause for rest, and to re-balance and re-build. We continue to believe wholeheartedly in the importance of local food networks and the social connections that support them, so while we’ll be taking a step back, we won’t be closing shop entirely.

Mike will continue to operate New Ground Farm on a more limited basis. Instead of the many different vegetables I've grown in the past, I'll focus on just a few of the ones that do best, like tomatoes and salad greens.

For those of you who were CSA members, we unfortunately won’t be offering a full selection of CSA plans in 2024. We are however exploring the possibility of offering a limited salad share, similar to what we did this past spring. We’ll post more details here in the next couple of weeks.

Another change is that Lisel and I will no longer be operating the Bethel Lane Farm Stop. But worry not: we are very excited to announce that Mark and Cindy, from T7 Ranch, will be assuming ownership and operation of it. We are still working through the details of location, but it might move 2 doors down the road to their farm. We are thrilled that the East Bethel Lane neighborhood will continue to have a farm stand presence. Mark and Cindy have been partners in the stand for many years, and we know the Farm Stop will be in great hands. Please plan to support them by shopping on East Bethel Lane, and follow T7 Ranch on social media to stay tuned as things unfold!

We wish you the best in the new year. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or comments.

In good food,

Mike and Lisel
