When Paula and I decided to buy some farmland in 2015, we never imagined all that Cate Farms would become. Along the way, we've raised cattle, added more land, and turned one of our barns into a space that hosts weddings, special events, and theatrical productions. This year, we're adding a new agricultural chapter to Cate Farms. This short video captures a special February day when three generations of our family came together to plant apple trees overlooking what will soon become our pumpkin patch.

There are people who come into your life at just the right time… and for us at Cate Farms, one of those people is Robert Helvey.

Robert has forgotten more about farming than I currently know and thankfully, he’s been patient enough to teach me along the way. From caring for cattle to understanding the rhythms of farm life, he has shared his knowledge freely, always with humility, kindness, and a true servant’s heart.

What I admire most about Robert isn’t just his experience or deep roots in Tennessee agriculture… it’s the way he invests in people. He genuinely wants others to succeed, and Cate Farms has been blessed because of that spirit.

As Paula and I continue learning this farming life, Robert has become one of the key reasons for the success and growth we’ve experienced so far. We are grateful for his friendship, wisdom, and steady guidance.

We’re cutting off our apple blossoms this year… on purpose 🌸🍎

As good as they look, this first season isn’t about apples... it’s about roots. By pinching off those early blooms, we’re helping these young trees put all their energy into growing stronger underground. That’s what leads to healthier trees and better harvests down the road.

Meanwhile, something else is taking shape. Our winter rye is coming in fast 🌱 and soon it’ll be mowed and tilled back into the soil to naturally feed the ground.

Next up: a pumpkin patch going in this June 🎃

That’s farm life — sometimes you hold back today to grow something better tomorrow. Follow along as we build this from the ground up.

Have you ever planted something that will take years to fully grow? This weekend, we planted 17 apple trees at Cate Farms... nine different varieties, chosen for seasons to come.

Kevin and Edison were right there helping put every one of them in the ground. We were muddy. We were tired. And we were feeling great. Those 17 trees are special. They represent the 17 members of the Cate-Ray family... each one unique, each one growing in their own season.

There’s something powerful about planting trees together. It’s not just about apples. It’s about legacy. About faith in the future. About building something that lasts. This orchard is just the beginning. A pumpkin patch is already in the plans for this fall. 🎃 And so much more is ahead for Cate Farms.

Seventeen trees. Seventeen stories. One family.
