Potato growth is beginning to close up the rows. They are starting to bloom, which doesn't affect the crop, but people say that the blooms are a sign that the potatoes are setting underground. They could really use some rain at this point in their growth.

Cover crop rye sown on last year’s potato patch to prevent erosion and add organic matter to the soil. It always amazes me that something I sowed last October survived a harsh winter and deer eating it to the dirt, then it grows vigorously come spring and matures this time of the year. Rye is an underappreciated crop. It is perfectly suited for our climate and thrives on neglect. It is never eaten by insects or troubled with disease. Rye was once a major crop in Watauga County in the 1800s.

Had to show this drought map. The dark red splotch, which covers eastern Watauga County, is in an exceptional drought, which is the highest ranking. Hopefully the rain this weekend will put us in better shape.

My new potato plow. You can't buy this anywhere; I had it custom made (modified) by Shawn Coffey. It is offset, meaning that I can drive over the top of the potato rows while the plow cultivates the space between the rows. Works perfectly.
