🌎💚 World Food Day: Good Food Doesn’t Have to Break the Budget!

Today is World Food Day, a reminder that access to good food matters. At Rainbow Food Co-op, we believe a well stocked pantry can help make everyday meals a little easier and more affordable.

🥣 5 budget-friendly pantry staples to keep on hand:

🫘 Dried beans and lentils
Stretch soups, stews, and casseroles with filling, versatile ingredients.

🌾 Oats and grains
From a warm breakfast to a hearty grain bowl, simple staples can go a long way.

🍚 Rice
An easy foundation for stir-fries, soups, and satisfying meals made from whatever you have on hand.

🍲 Soup ingredients and mixes
Keep a comforting meal within reach for chilly days or busy evenings.

🌿 Herbs and spices
A pinch of seasoning can turn basic pantry ingredients into something delicious without needing a long shopping list.

💡 A little pantry-planning tip: Choose ingredients that work in several different meals. A bag of rice, a few beans, and your favorite seasonings can become soup one day and a hearty skillet meal the next.

You don’t need an extravagant pantry to make good food. Sometimes the simplest ingredients are the ones that work hardest!

💚 What’s one affordable pantry staple you always keep in your kitchen? Tell us in the comments!

🌿 Thoughtful Thursday: Keep Your Herbs & Spices Fresh!

Ever wondered why your spices don’t smell as fragrant as they used to? How you store them makes a difference!

🍃 5 simple tips for fresher herbs and spices:

🫙 1. Keep them airtight. Store dried herbs and spices in tightly sealed jars or containers to help protect their flavor and aroma.

🌑 2. Keep them in the dark. Light can cause herbs and spices to lose their color and flavor. A cupboard is better than an open shelf in direct sunlight.

🔥 3. Keep them away from heat. Store your spice collection away from the stove, oven, and other warm spots.

💧 4. Keep moisture out. Always use a dry spoon, and avoid shaking spices directly over a steaming pot. Moisture can cause clumping and spoilage.

👃 5. Let your nose decide. Over time, dried herbs and spices gradually lose their potency. If they no longer smell fragrant when you rub a little between your fingers, they may not bring much flavor to your cooking.

✨ Co-op tip: Buying only what you need can help you keep your spice collection fresh without filling your cupboard with jars you’ll rarely use!

🌿 Whether you’re seasoning a cozy fall soup or baking something sweet, properly stored herbs and spices help you get the most from every pinch.

💚 What spice do you reach for most often in your kitchen?
