Blue Valley Gardens

Blue Valley Gardens We are a family-operated, MOSA certified organic farm located 30 miles west of Madison, WI.

Matt and Susan Smith began the farm in 1984 and have since expanded that farm's offerings to, among other things, heritage turkeys, chickens, asparagus, ducks, tomatoes, spinach, honey, potatoes, and garlic.

“Food is a vice and it is one of my favorites. When I was going back to school in 1975 at UW-Madison, I was deciding what to do. When I saw fruit and vegetable production offered under the A

g School's Department of Horticulture, I was sold. I worked at several other farms selling at DCFM until we got our own place going in 1984. We are certified and maintain a strong organic outlook and goal of raising all our own produce and poultry. Our products are a reflection of our commitment to allowing our customers to enjoy the best quality organic produce and poultry possible. That level of good feeling can continue when they display those same vegetables, fruits and meats at the table.”
—Matt Smith

This is the first year in nearly 40 that we won't have Thanksgiving turkeys. We're ordering our bird from Todd Carr at Pecatonica Valley Farms. The easiest way to order from him is at https://wisconsinweeklyharvest.com/ In other news, I'm now a hobby farmer and just harvested my first saffron.

We haven't done an asparagus dinner since the "before times" so we're excited to be the guests of our neighbors MaryAnn Manfredini Bellazzini and Marc at Campo Di Bella. There's still room at the Saturday evening June 1 dinner, where we will be, and for those looking for a lighter meal, our asparagus will be featured on Friday night, too. You can make a reservation at https://www.campodibella.com/restaurant/

Opening Day in Milwaukee is Tuesday April 2 and I have two tickets I can't use. Anyone want to welcome spring Milwaukee Brewers style? DM me. They're $35 face value but I would rather they be used.

After 16 days in the hospital, and a week in the ICU, Matt is back in the building! The dogs were delighted that their god had returned and slept at his feed last night. It's going to be a long road to recovery from pneumonia, and while I delayed my trip to Spain, I'm still going, and so Lily Smith made a "meal train" to feed him while I'm gone. See comments for the link. The kids and MoHo area friends will be helping with daily duties. It takes a village!

As some of you know, Matt has been in the hospital for 10 days fighting COVID pneumonia. It's been so long that there were ice fishermen on Monona Bay when we arrived at the ER and now there are semi-naked people playing volleyball in the Park. When you're in the hospital this long, it's the little things that count, and today's ray of sunshine award goes to Lisa Jacobson of The Mermaid Kitchen, who sent along bagels, babka, and love. Yesterday, it was pizza and Wisconsin Men's Basketball. Looking for Monday ideas!

Thanks for making us part of your holiday! And now a word from Farmer Matt and Farmer Todd about the true meaning of Thanksgiving: Turkey sandwiches!

Turkeys require 20 weeks to get to a proper Thanksgiving-size centerpiece. With fewer families having big get-togethers, these turkey farmers suggest ways to...
