People in the cattle business often use catchy words like âmaternal, sound, prepotent, terminal, etcâ. Those catch phrases or words seem to mean different things to different people. More times than not, it seems like many classify cattle as âmaternalâ based on the EPD profile that make up $M. We are not here to dictate if this is right or wrong.
What we are here to help clarify to our standards is âAthletic.â If you are an active follower of Rahe Family Angus, you have often heard us use this term. Why might you ask? Well, we would love to tell you!
According to Websterâs dictionary, âathleticâ is described as âsomeone who is physically strong, active, fit, or often possessing a muscular, well-proportioned build.â This is paraphrased because it also discusses sports.
We believe cattle who are âAthleticâ - are powerful, structurally sound, muscular, free-moving, easily maintain their condition, and flesh with ease. At the end of the day, cattle mimic professional athletes. They need to maintain strong fertility, efficiently turn grass into protein, travel with ease, and produce a healthy calf every year. Their body is surviving the elements, while also being red meat producing machines. If they canât do this, the get benched (aka culled).
In our opinion, Musgrave Benelli fits the bill. His dam, J472, is a maternal masterpiece! She is extremely sound structured, has excellent eye appeal, great hoof, fleshes with ease, has a beautiful udder, and breeds back timely. Benelli has been with cows since October and has not been given a break. People are usually amazed by how well conditioned he is in since he gets no special treatment. He stands on a near perfect foot, is structurally sound, extremely fit, and is a highly fertile breeding powerhouse.
Benelli is unlike any bull we have ever had. When he sees or hears the trailer he like a bird dog with a shotgun - excited and ready to go! We canât get the doors opened fast enough as he knows heâs being taken to his next assignment. The video highlights a lot of his character and why he has the will and determination to carve his own path in the Angus breed.
*Yes, although we are thankful for the 4â+ of rain we received this past 10 days, we are extremely muddy! Hoping to get our last pasture fence repaired this week to get the rest of the cows kicked out to grass!!*
