❤️ Views from the vacation rental ❤️

This week I hit the road and got hired to chef it up for a week in this gorgeous vacation home in South Lake Tahoe.

These are just some of the beautiful views from the house. And yes — I do book private chef work in vacation rentals, including weekly stays

The atmosphere here is reminiscent of a farmers market blended with a charming neighborhood farmstand. During the pandemic, she established a small farmstand in her backyard, which was soon discovered by an increasing number of people. As a result, various local food businesses began offering to sell their products, including bread, preserves, honey, pasteurized pork, and more. Eventually, it was necessary to relocate to a new space, where she took over the old school house on Point Reyes-Petaluma Road. The location has since been transformed into a vibrant community food hub, offering classes in the old school house, fresh produce, and a diverse selection of local specialties, including honey, jams, freshly milled flour, olive oil, gifts, and local meats. One can imagine enjoying warm, freshly baked goods alongside a favorite coffee from the on-site coffee cart.

Did you know one of the oldest recorded hummus recipes dates back to the 14th century?

This isn’t the smooth, creamy dip we know today, but a rustic, nutty dish called Himmas Kassa, preserved in a medieval Egyptian cookbook.

Instead of being blended silky smooth, it was coarse, full of texture, and mixed with walnuts, fresh herbs, and spices like cinnamon, ginger, and caraway. It was served at banquets as one of the opening courses, showing off the host’s refinement and generosity.

What I love most about this dish is how it reflects the sophistication of the medieval Islamic world. Food was never just fuel. It was art, medicine, and culture all on one plate. Every garnish, from pistachios to olives, spoke of wealth, trade, and attention to beauty. Tasting it today is like taking a bite straight out of history.

I recreated Himmas Kassa and it’s a delicious surprise. A little sharper, nuttier, and more rustic than modern hummus, but it has a depth that makes you feel its age and importance. Dip it with flatbread and you can imagine yourself at a medieval banquet in Cairo.
