Why is Grassfed important?
Most cows start out grass fed, but then go to a sale barn and then off into a conventional feed lot where they are overfed, overcrowded, and over medicated. They are fed corn or grain that is high in sugar to pack on pounds, mostly excess fat! They are super medicated so they don't get sick in the terrible living conditions and pumped with max growth hormones to make them get bigger than natural. During their time at the feed lot they stand idle and eat corn/grain (that makes the fat in a regular steak- full of omega 6/9 fat that causes heart disease)
Conversely: Our cows eat grass, everyday, of their whole lives. We move them most every day, into fresh green pastures and away from their manure.
They actually run around alot and form small friend groups (even cows form cliques?)

Early morning pasture walk. No technology can replace keen daily observation of the state of the land, and really enjoy God's creation and beauty! Bonus is we hit some golf balls too!

Over the next few posts I will cover what each part stands for and means to us.

B&B-
Bradley and Bryan- This is a collaboration between our two families. Tim and Martha Bradley (Jen's Mom and Stepfather) and Ben and Jen Bryan. Tim had a few cows on 50 acres in Cuero TX just east of San Antonio for the last 20ish years while he also worked for FEDEX driving those huge double long trailer 18-wheelers between Victoria and Houston AT NIGHT! During COVID, less people were shipping items so Tim voluntarily took a furlough to let the younger drivers with young families continue to work since they were less able to afford to miss a paycheck. The blessing in this was that Tim actually got to be at home and awake during the day. He is such a hard worker, that he was out on the land everyday making the land better and tending to his cows. During that same time, Ben was finishing a program called Battleground to Breaking Ground through Texas A&M Agrilife to help veterans get into agricultural careers. Ben built a business plan for a grass fed beef business built around the use of regenerative practices, his experience with Crossfit and nutrition and the need for affordable grass fed beef. The COVID timeframe gave Tim and Ben the time to work together and share ideas and put the initial processes in place. I could go on and on about this, needless to say, God opened up this opportunity, gave us the gifts and talents, and we are doing our best to glorify God in all we do.

We use a system called intensive rotational grazing, mob grazing, or as we call it - Adaptive Grazing. We move the herd daily using temporary paddocks made with electric poly wire. The key to being able to do this is our water system. We bring the water to the herd, in fact, we try to never have it more than 900ft from them. Then they go to water as individuals or pairs. When the water is far away, the whole herd makes the trek to and from water as a natural instinct for protection from predators. They tend to follow the same path over and over causing a path to develop with no grass, when it rains, water flows down these worn paths causing rapid erosion. Having water close keeps our cows healthy and low stress!
If you'd like to learn more about why we manage the herd like we do, then check out this Ted talk with over 5 million views by Allan Savory- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpTHi7O66pI

It always amazes me when I see how cows are supposed to move. Our cows really come running to their new paddocks. Conventionally raised cows spend at minimum their last months in a confined feedlot, eating corn to pack on fat. They don't move, they don't run like this. God created these amazing animals to be strong and resilient and function as a vital part of a living symbiotic ecosystem. We try to mimic that as closely as we can.

This is Tim, he does the hard work of moving the cows, checking water, building temporary fence for paddocks, spreading seed, and anything else it takes to keep the herd safe and happy. He brings so much love, care, humility, and wisdom to everything he does.

We planted a cover crop mix about a month ago, just to cover up some bare ground. It's coming in great and in a couple of weeks the cows are gonna get a chance to munch it down!!!

Recent rain making the spring growing season awesome.
Total grazing... Using temporary electric fencing and high density grazing for healthy cattle and healthy land. It's more work and management day to day but the benefits far out weigh the extra work.

We are committed to improving the land. We do this through intensive rotational grazing methods where we move the herd to new paddocks of fresh grass 2-3 times a day. It's alot more labor for Tim Bradley (Co-owner/ranch manager) but the cows love it, they really eat everything, and the land is fertilized and then gets a long rest and regrowth period before it gets grazed again. This method rapidly improves soil carbon sequestration, nutrients in the grass, and even water infiltration.
