Big Shout-Out to Bob Cooley

A few months ago, Bob brought us a local oyster mushroom he found growing right here in Idaho. We started by taking a spore print and making a tissue transfer to agar to clean up the culture. After two additional agar transfers, the culture was ready for grain. From grain, it moved to substrate, and now we have this local variety fruiting right here in the shop!

It's always exciting to see a wild local specimen make the journey from the forest to cultivation. Here are photos documenting the process over the last couple of months.

Light rain means the fungi will be making a showing.

I belong to a lot of "mushroom groups" here on social media and It's very common the question to start with from people is "Is this Edible?" with low quality pictures of some beat up, questionable, fungus.

It is important to know what you're bringing home and a good rule to follow is, if you do not know with 100% certainly yourself, then it is not edible and should not be eaten.

Google Lens is NOT reliable, Social media is helpful but not a 100%.
A good book is handy and best practice is self education through hands on field work with knowledgeable people. A local mycology Club in your area is one of the best bet as they work with what you will find, if you're in the Boise area I'd suggest SIMA, Southern Idaho Mushroom Club .org or if you'd like a broader resource, North America Mycology Association .org

Tuesday Grow Spotlight - Pink Oyster - (Pleurotus Djamor)

Pink Oyster mushrooms are one of the fastest-growing and most visually striking gourmet mushrooms we cultivate at Boise Mushroom Company. Known for their bright pink clusters and delicate seafood-like flavor, these tropical oysters thrive in warm growing conditions and can explode with growth in just a few days.
Growing Parameters for Pink Oysters:

• Temperature: 70–85°F fruiting range
• Humidity: 85–95% relative humidity
• Fresh Air Exchange: High airflow is critical to prevent long stems and small caps
• Lighting: Indirect light or low ambient grow lighting
• Colonization Speed: Extremely aggressive and fast-growing
• Substrates: Straw, hardwood pellets, soy hull mixes, and supplemented sawdust

Pink Oysters are excellent for beginners because of their rapid colonization and quick fruiting times, but they do require careful airflow management compared to other oyster species.
One of the most fascinating things about Pink Oysters is how quickly they respond to environmental changes. With the right humidity and fresh air, small pin sets can turn into full harvest-ready clusters in only a matter of days.
