Duck update: the 3 mallard ducklings we rescued turned out to be all females. They’re fully splashing and flying now (inside the aviary pen), holding their own with the big ducks and chickens.

One of the Cayuga ducklings looks like a boy. Green feathers, thicker neck, classic drake signs. He’s sweet on the Swedish blue duck he was raised with.

We’re on our last batch of replacement hatchlings, grown from our own eggs: Alchemist Farm Moss Eggers x Black Copper Marans. Hoping to keep these layers for a few good years before we have to start over.

Plenty of eggs right now. Duck eggs are fabulous for quiches, cakes, baking. Richer, higher in immunity-boosting nutrients, and they taste like our chicken eggs since everyone eats the same food.

Planning on releasing the mallards back in the wild in the Fall. They are farm from tamed Any thoughts or practical wisdom?

Schlepping sheep today! Picked up 4 adult wethers and delivered 3 wethered boys to 🌿Suzanne & Bob🌿, and got to see our boys Junior (aka Frankie) and his twin brother Duke. Junior was our only bummer lamb this year.

Dropped off the 4 adult Shetland x Ouessant cross sheep from 🌿Suzanne & Bob🌿 to Scape Goat Grazing at Raven Rock Farm.

Whew. Full stop soon. Wrapping up sheep schlepping for the day and on to other farm chores.

Ram recap: We keep two rams for breeding and keep a separate boys flock and mamas lambs, and Llama flock.

VVF Donovan is our Black Gulmoget ram. He has fine fleece, true solid black with Gulmoget markings. His fleece has developed a frosted sweep on his hind quarter which results in roving and yarn that is true black to very dark charcoal. When mated with Grey, Moorit brown, or Black ewe he has consistently thrown Dark Brown, Black, and Gulmoget (Badger face) markings. He’s a kind sweet ram that tends to step in to protect smaller sheep from being bullied.

VVF Tex is our finest fleece boy, with tight crimps in medium dark Moorit (brown) that gets sun bleached tips which makes a root beer colored roving and yarn. He also has a sweet disposition but is more of a basher than Donovan. He makes flashy lambs because he can throw several types of markings but only brown (moorit) coloring.

Better pics of the 2026 Shetland lambs that are available for sale. Boys can be sold as rams or banded to become wethers. Fiber pet or fiber flock. No black ewes for sale this year. I’m rebuilding my dark colored breeding stock. All lambs are currently unregistered (unnamed, untagged) but can be registered (NASSA papers) after sale for an additional fee.

Gordy, Clyde, and Jake headed to their new home in Santa Rosa, where they’ll join a small herd of goats grazing the ranch. Their fleece will be blended with the farmer’s alpaca fiber to make beautiful yarn.

Shetlands are the Jack Russell terriers of the sheep world – astute, quirky, stubborn, full of heart. That’s exactly why I breed them. Breeding fine-fleece Shetlands as fiber pets and starter flocks never gets old.

Love these handsome fellas.

Lamb update: they are almost weaned. Lambs are eating hay, grass, and still getting milk. It’s a rich diet and they are looking cute and chonky.

I’m gonna leave this chubby cheer here for the start of Mother’s Day Weekend. 💗

Fresh crew of 2026 lambs. Lambing season has wrapped, and these little ones are already grazing, easing off their moms, and finding their footing in the flock.
And yes—very serious training underway in the essential art of King (and Queen) of the Hill.

Last two little ewe labs got yard access today and are back in there snug pen with their mom - 48 hrs old.

I’ll post more photos of the latest lambs next. mom is not tolerating visitors or paparazzi.
