Sandy Slopes Farms Connecting You to Home Grown

The piggies are preparing for adventures! With that came our first day of hot wire training. I will say, I expected pigs to catch on way faster than lambs, but I’ve never seen lambs need to get their noses shocked so many times to avoid it. However, the pigs have not crossed the wire at all. It’s very interesting observing their way of interacting with the world compared to cows and sheep.

How appropriate that we found my grandpa’s 4H pig book the same day we decided to raise pigs for the first time.

I grew up with stories of all the relatives coming together to butcher hogs after thanksgiving. Those days sadly ended before my time. We’re very excited to have pigs part of Sandy Slopes Farms, however, I doubt we will be able to match his cost though! 😂

Farming is not meant to be a lonely endeavor, with self-sufficiency so focused on that it becomes idolized. Sometimes you get stuck in the mud and you need your brother to come help you pull it out. Or you need your uncle, cousins, brothers, neighbors and everyone else that will happens to drive by, to help you herd the runaway cows and sheep back into the fences.

Try not to let your pride blind you from asking for help. Farming is meant to humbly bring us together and remind us that we aren’t meant to live this life without our community. It’s an opportunity for gratitude. To everyone who has helped us in our times of need, thank you! Today, thank you especially to Jaden Sachs for helping get me out of the mud.

April has always been a bit too aggressive with her horns, we’ve tried capping them, covering them, and other various ways of blunting them. Today we finally cut the tips off with a wire. She was only mildly annoyed, and is far less intimidating! Let’s hope without those sharp tips she causes less harm!

March was full of new life and we have loved every bit of it! It’s such a blessing to share moments like these with you! Clover gave birth to this beautiful ram lamb Friday night and we captured his first wobbly steps!

For anyone worried the heat lamp was tied in multiple locations for fire safety and was removed after the lambs first night when it was below freezing!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from our ladies! Rhythm and Rosie are Belfairs which are a cross between Irish Dexter cattle and Jerseys, and April is an Irish Dexter (probably with a bit of Highlander in her)! Today we celebrate the Irish heritage of our girls and of course Christianity being brought to Ireland! Slainte! ☘️

Chaos and uncertainty have been front of mind lately. However, when you find an unexpected calf, you remember, this is what it’s all about. There’s calves running, lambs bouncing, and we get the privilege of caring for them. Stewarding God’s creatures, nothing beats it.

It’s been busy as the lambs have started coming! 3 bottle babies, lots of twins, all very cute and bouncing around!

These steers headed off to fill 6 freezers today! It’s an odd time for me, I interact with and befriend these steers every day. We chat, they depend on me showing up. All to make it to today. I know they lived a good life and have 1 bad day. They sustain 6 families for the next year as a result. Thank you my friends.
