There’s a lot of noise surrounding the food system and agriculture these days, isn’t there friends?
A new food recall every week. Lab grown meats, eggs, dairy (and who knows what else!). Imported meats (hello most recent headline about 300,000 metric tons of imported beef coming into our country to “lower” the cost of beef at the grocery store 🙄). And the list goes on. It can be exhausting trying to figure out what to feed yourself and your family these days, can’t it?
We know groceries are expensive (we are a family of 5!). We know buying everything local isn’t always possible or economical. BUT, we do know that supporting and standing behind small farms and ranches is vital to our local agricultural economies. The number of farms in this country is at an all time low. The average age of the American farmer continues to climb. The costs of fuel, feed, and fertilizers alone are astronomical these days. The concept of “cheap” beef, chicken, pork (food in general) is a lie. There is always a cost to pay. So what’s the solution? To be honest, I don’t know. The system as a whole is broken and solutions are complex. But what I do know is that every small farm I know of needs your support. Every cattle rancher. Every vegetable producer. Every pasture raised chicken operation. Every hog farmer. Whether you spend $10 a week or $100 week doesn’t matter. What matters is that we all start doing our part to support our local economies and put American farmers first.
Because a country that cannot feed itself will never be truly free.
