After Midnight Radio Chatter
I was reminded of a couple incidents at Nelson's ship yard recently. I was there with the Miss Jeannine at the time. She was a 54 foot Ed Lipscomb built boat built on Fish River Alabama. I bought her in 1976. Mr. James Nelson had hauled her out and did the annual maintenance on her and put her back overboard. I had taken the exhaust pipeing out of her and was replacing it with new pipe. I had got it all put together with the exception of the muffler that went on the exhaust pipe that extended from the engine room to the roof of the back portion of the cabin. I had everything laid out and it only needed to be welded together. The shipyard had a welding machine set up to use almost anywhere on the premises. I got the cables pulled out and was getting them to my boat to get the final connection made with the exhaust system. I was walking backwards pulling the cables down the dock and I stepped back one step to far. Overboard I went. Cables in my hands. I started yelling for help and Mr. James Nelson came running to my aid. He was a older man and he came running across the railway that was empty but all the cables was stretched out to pull another boat out like a young man. He got across them in a flash. He thought I was getting electrocuted. He was hollering for Jimmy Nelson to hurry down there to help. When they realized that I wasn't being electrocuted they laughed at me. You see I couldn't swim. Jimmy called out ,stand up. Stand up. The water was only about 4 or 5 feet deep. I crawled out and Mr. James scolded me good
He said boy I about killed myself trying to save your life. Well needless to say I didn't get the muffler welded on that day. I had created to much excitement for them and me. The next day we got it done. He told me don't you ever scare me again. We laughed then it was funny but it wasn't funny to them or me when it happened. Lesson learned watch where you step while walking backwards down a dock. He was always good to me but never let me forget. The song I picked for this edition is Step into the water. I may call it Fall into the water from now on. Thank you Lord for saving my soul and shallow water.
