FALL CHECK UP FROM YOUR FARM

July and August brought lots of heavy smoke from relentless forest fires right across the river. Even the cows and chickens were wearing damp bandanas to freshen the air! We spent the time making our delicious full fruit jams, rendering pork fat into lard and beef fat into tallow. Yum! We finally started getting some rain to quench the fires and water the grass. Thank God! Fall colors are right around the corner!

Barn work has been STEADY as we finally finished the Farm Market air conditioning and heat! It's so nice to work - and shop - in a cool and comfortable space. We added a much larger, nicer “Bread N Jam” and “Corgi Coffee Co” display to the store, and are adding a fine jewelry case for your shopping. Now we plunge ahead on completing the Vent Hood and fire suppression in the commercial kitchen. The vent hood is online for completion by the end of September. Cross your fingers!

WE DIDN'T BURN DOWN!

This is twice in 5 years that Bent Tree Farm Idaho did not burn down! I am so happy! Grateful! Thrilled, all the other adjectives I can throw in here! We have been blessed by our Creator with not having to start all over from a charred cinder.

Our farm is directly across the Koutenai River from Parker Ridge, which burned 4 or 5 years ago. Then, we were told to evacuate a couple of times, but the fires passed over us. This year, the Smith Creek fire burned what was left of the Parker Ridge area that didn't burn five years ago. We have been on pins and needles expecting an evacuation order, an order that has not come. Hallelujah!

To top it off, we got a nice rain two nights ago that seems to have dampened the fires. Equally as important is the smoke which had hidden our farm is now gone, and we can see the cows, the chickens, the dry grass, everything. Even as we're guarding the farm, we were still able to haul two fine beef to our Montana USDA processor on Monday. PLUS - We now have AIR CONDITIONING in the Store!

It's a typical far FAR north Idaho summer this year at Bent Tree Farm Idaho. First off, it's hot. How hot, you say? Well, the cow is giving evaporated milk, and our chickens are laying omelets. It's so hot, Granny just broke wind to have a little breeze. Yeah, it's hot. But, worse, it's smoky. Hot and smoky. Not my favorite combination.

This year, forest fires are west along a ridge about two miles away across the Kootenai River, plus another fire due south of us about two miles. The Chinook helicopters carrying water are flying right over our house. The fire map of Washington looks like a bad case of acne, dozens of homes burned in Spokane yesterday, and fires are pretty solid down into Oregon and California. No matter which way the wind blows (and without Granny the wind’s not blowing), ALL the smoke has settled into our little valley like a dense, stinky, gray blanket.

AND THE FARM GOES ON

This entire year is a history filled year, what with the Revolutionary War starting July 4, 1776. We will be hearing about this all year long, and I'm excited! But, the Farm goes on.

July on your Farm is often one of expectant waiting. Crops are growing, cattle fattening, chickens laying. The pastures are green, but growth is slower, and it doesn't take the cows long to eat them down. We're building pasture 24/7.

Chickens spend the mornings scratching and spreading manure, eating bugs, and cackling about one thing or another. Around 10:00 they are laying up a storm, making eggs for your plate. By 2:00 they are outside in the shade, taking dust baths. Chicken life is pretty predictable.

The cows are easy to control, just give them plenty of fresh water, some salt, and they're ready to spend their day eating. The little calves frolic and chase each other, that is until they run into Halfsack, the bull. He generally kicks one and the rest fall in line.

And us, your Farmer? We're busy fixing fence, painting things, and building the commercial kitchen. All the Farm gets attention, and we spend ample time just looking at the cows and crops and chickens. But, most of all, we get ready for bringing you the best our small corner of the planet can produce.

TALLOW AND LARD - When in the course of butchering our animals we find extra fat, we trim it away instead of selling it to you like it's meat. Then, we slow render it to the best beef tallow and pork lard possible. Our triple washed TALLOW is $22 per quart jar, and our LARD is is $9 per quart jar.
