This week we went to the science museum. I never realized how quiet it could actually be until we went during a traditional school day. I much prefer it over going on a weekend or during the summer šŸ˜‚

We also celebrated the start of fall by learning about the autumnal equinox. They collected leaves and did some leaf rubbings.
They also find a lizard, and made a habitat for it.

Another great week of homeschool!

We spent an entire day at the zoo. Read more about Leif the Lucky, and made a Viking longship (longest 2 hours ever šŸ˜‚). And used rocks, mud, and sand to make the layers of Earth.

We just wrapped up our first full week of school.
We enjoyed cinnamon rolls on our first day, and read some lovely books about homeschooling. We took our obligatory first day of school pictures. Then, we dove right into it.
So far I would say our favorite subjects for 1st grade are math, science, and Spanish. For pre-k(3), we are simply learning phonics when the interest is there. Otherwise he’s off playing somewhere. šŸ˜‚

It doesn’t seem like much, but the table is prepared to start our very first year of homeschooling.
We’ve been doing math and LA all summer. But now we will start learning history, geography, science, and Spanish together.
To say I’m nervous is an understatement. But I’m also so excited to learn alongside my children.

It’s back to school season for all the public and private schools in our area. While we’ve been doing math and language arts all summer, we will start our official first year homeschooling in 2 weeks, adding in history, geography, and science! To say I’m excited to begin our journey is a huge understatement!
We completed our lessons for today. And now we are enjoying the cool rainy day on our back porch!

We took a much needed break from our ā€˜homesteading lifestyle’. And we reevaluated quite a few things.

We decided goats weren’t right for us. I put gardening on the back burner. And I haven’t made much from scratch lately either. This year came with so many ups and downs, mostly downs it seems. But life goes on!

As I slowly ease back into the swing of things, we will start our homeschooling journey. And I decided that I would document our experiences here! I will also go back to sharing our homestead life as well!

For now, we are enjoying our new playground that our little ones help us build (along with family).

We use a fair amount of garlic. So I thought: ā€˜why not grow them myself?’ I planted them in October and decided to harvest them today! Even though quite a few are still smaller than I’d like, I think I did pretty good for my first try. I’ve learned a few things I will apply to my next fall planting.

And now it’s time to be patient for the curing process.

We got our meat birds from this morning! And almost all the kiddos wanted to play with the chicks. They learned how to hold the chicks gently, and how to care for them.

Just one of the many perks of a farm lifestyle that I love.

It’s been a few months since I last posted. So I figured, what better way to say HI than to share our fun weekend!

We started raising meat birds for the first time in October as an experiment. I ordered 20 Big Red Broilers and also got a Cornish cross as a free chick.

This past Saturday we dispatched all of them. We managed to knock them out in about 2 hours. (Thanks to all our help ā˜ŗļø) We opted to skin and quarter them this time.
We kept chicken necks and a few carcasses for chicken broth/stock. And some of the other carcasses were fed to our LGDs. We will use the chicken feet as dog treats for them as well.

On Sunday we separated all the cuts and started packaging them. This also took us 2 hours (we didn’t realized we would want help with this šŸ˜‚). I’m happy to say that we ended up with 70.6 lbs of meat. The largest set of breast weighed almost 3 lbs.

I’ve learned a lot in this process. We will most likely do this again. But I will want a moveable tractor next time šŸ˜‚.

Have you raised meat birds? If so, what tips do you have for a newbie? What breeds did you try?
Drop them below ā¬‡ļø

I believe that learning how to make the most out of your food is an important skill.
I hate to admit it, but I can be wasteful with food. But I’m determined to be better. Tonight’s dinner is chicken stir-fry, using leftover chicken from our whole chicken yesterday. There’s enough chicken that I just may have to make a third meal from it!
There was a time I would’ve packaged the chicken and forgotten all about it.

Oh and peep my adorable toddler helping me work on our long term storage for our bulk pantry purchases.

So I will be attending a goat workshop in December. And I’m so excited!

Are you attending this workshop? Or have a workshop/class you recommend for goat owners? Drop it below ā¬‡ļø
