Borgogno “No Name” is a 100% Langhe Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont, Italy, created as a protest against Italian wine bureaucracy when a premium Barolo sample was denied DOCG status.
It is a high-quality “declassified” Barolo from prestigious sites (like Cannubi, Liste, Fossati), offering notes of cherry, rose, and truffle.
The Story Behind No Name:
The Protest: In 2005, the historic winery [cited on Borgogno Vini] submitted samples of their Barolo for certification. While one cask was approved, another from the same, high-quality production was rejected by the tasting commission.
The Response: Outraged by the rejection, the producer decided to “declassify” the exceptional wine—which hailed from prestigious sites like Cannubi, Fossati, and Liste—and sell it as a mere Langhe Nebbiolo under the name “No Name,” an Etichetta di Protesta (Protest Label).
The Goal: The aim was to show that the quality of the liquid inside mattered more than the DOCG approval.
