Fire Resistant Trees for Home Landscaping.
Reduce fire risk with proper tree selection.
With fires threatening much of the PNW and ash drifting across our farms, we thought it would be useful to share some fire-resistant trees and tips.

First, fire-resistant does NOT mean fire-proof. Given enough heat and oxygen, any tree can and will burn. BUT…fire resistant trees do not easily ignite, they produce fewer embers, and their foliage and branches do not significantly contribute to fuel and fire intensity due high moisture content, open branching pattern, lack of dead material, and chemical content.

🌳 Fire-resistant tree traits:
-Trees with high water content in wood, moister rich water-like sap
-Branching patterns that are open and loose.
-Plants that have little dead wood and tend not to accumulate dry and dead material.
-Leaves are wide, flat, moist, and supple.

🏡 Tips to maintaining fire-resistant landscape:
-Reduce fuels such as weedy vegetation.
-Use proper spacing and carefully maintain fire-resistant trees and shrubs to reduce accumulation of dry and dead material.
-Keep trees and plants well-watered to maintain plant health, sustain leaf moisture content, and reduce drought stress.

For more information about this topic, Oregon State University (OSU) Extension Service has written and incredible article Fire-resistant plants for home landscapes (https://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/pnw-590-fire-resistant-plants-home-landscapes) and they have provided an extensive Fire-resistant tree list (https://extension.oregonstate.edu/gallery/fire-resistant-plant-profiles-trees).

Looking for a columnar "industrial-strength maple" for your dry, highly urbanized soil? Lush bright green foliage of the Armstrong Gold® Maple in the summer turns a warm yellow in the fall that glows when the sunlight filters through the leaves creating a dramatic golden spire. Selected from an evaluation of hundreds of seedlings of ‘Armstrong’, this cultivar improves greatly on the parent, with brighter golden-yellow fall foliage color, greater foliage density and compact, less leggy growth habit. Greatly improved columnar form recommends it for narrow street planting sites and stunning property borders. Low maintenance, tightly columnar, and a beauty to behold...an excellent urban tree. As urban centers grow, so does the need for trees that can make a tall, elegant statement on a very narrow small footprint and provide much needed shade in the open spaces around apartment buildings, along streets, and in median strips. We’ve been “Growing New Ideas” since 1946 and are unique among nurseries for our research and development efforts that have brought more than 115 new tree cultivars to the marketplace. Below are three of our new and improved urban tree cultivars developed specifically for tall, narrow, urban spaces.
▪️ Skinny Genes® Oak Quercus x bimundorum 'JFS-KW2QX' PP 24442
USDA Zone: 4
Height: 45' x Spread: 10'
Columnar and fastigiate in form, it is the narrowest yet of the English x White Oak hybrids. The glossy, very dark green summer foliage is mildew resistant and gives a clean summer appearance, then turns yellow in autumn. Selected from second-generation seedlings of a sister of Crimson Spire™.
▪️Javelin® Pear Pyrus 'NCPX1' PP 26539
USDA Zone: 5
Height: 35' x Spread: 10'
The tightest and most columnar pear we have seen, it stays narrow as it matures. Unique foliage leafs out purple, then matures to glossy dark green in the heat of summer. Developed at North Carolina State University, this fireblight resistant pear is a great addition as a landscape exclamation point or for use on narrow streets.
▪️Mountain Sentinel® Aspen Populus tremuloides 'JFS-Column'
USDA Zone: 3
Height: 35' x Spread: 8'
Our native aspen is now available in fastigiate form! Extremely narrow and upright, with ascending branches, it has the same silvery-gray bark, fluttering leaves, and golden yellow fall color, but in a much narrower form.

Jim Donohoe, our New Plant Development Specialist, is responsible for curating the office landscape and arboretum collection. A few years ago, we began discussing ways to improve our plant labeling system.
Our original plan was to continue using printed vinyl labels mounted to stainless steel stakes, designed and fabricated by our Hood Acres shop team. They were functional, but the collection deserved something more permanent and professional. Jim advocated for black anodized aluminum labels, though the cost of outsourcing them proved difficult to justify.
Fortunately, our Marketing Director, Jeff Lafrenz, encouraged management to consider producing them in-house. That led to the purchase of a laser engraver, along with the creation of a custom template and jig that allows us to efficiently produce multiple labels ourselves.
The finished labels exceeded expectations. Each includes the plant name, mature size, USDA hardiness zone, year planted, and a QR code linking directly to the tree on our website’s searchable database.
This project brought together Marketing, Hood Acres Shop, Inventory, and New Plant Development, resulting in durable professional labels that will serve our arboretum for years.
