Let’s talk about chicken feed, hormone health, and the reality of raising your own meat. 🍽️👇
A lot of health-conscious people choose pasture-raised chicken to avoid the massive amount of flaxseed and soy used in industrial farming. Industrial operations heavily pump these ingredients into feed to artificially boost Omega-3s.
The downside? Flax and soy are packed with phytoestrogens (plant-based compounds that mimic estrogen) and PUFAs, which accumulate directly in the animal’s tissues. If you are trying to optimize your hormonal health, commercial chicken can be a sneaky source of exposure.
Now, let’s be 100% transparent about our own birds.
We believe in being completely honest with you on our farming journey. Because this batch was an unexpected surprise we had to work with what we could get:
1️⃣ Our feed for this batch still contains soy.
2️⃣ Because this batch was totally unexpected, we didn’t have a chicken tractor available and weren’t able to rotate their pens as frequently as we wanted to.
Even though they spent their days outside with access to fresh air, sunshine, and bugs, we know we can do better. This batch was a learning experience for us.
We are already preparing for our next round of birds. Our goals are to source a completely soy-free feed and establish a strict daily pasture rotation routine to give them the ultimate foraging lifestyle.
Farming and homesteading is a journey of constant improvement, not overnight perfection. We are proud to put food on our own table that is lightyears ahead of the grocery store, and we can’t wait to make the next batch even cleaner.
