Preserving our own foods is part of our home-grown way of life. Our meat chickens got butchered last week, which means it’s time to boil down some bones with some vegetables and fresh herbs from the garden. The broth we get from one weekend of canning will last us all year, until chicken butchering season rolls around again. That’s the hope anyway…these kids eat more everyday. 🤪
We do the same when the raspberries are ripe and it’s time to make jam. Sometimes it’s pasta sauce or pickled beets. Just depends on what season we’re in and what’s available. Every year I learn at least one new recipe or food to store, because why not? It’s an easy decision for me to trade a weekend for better-tasting food year-round, and a lower bill at the grocery store to boot.
Do you can your own food too? What are your must-haves or new favorites? I’d love to hear them!
