My primary job is as a Grant Writer and I used my skills to apply for a grant to expand Meadowlark Granary. The Value Added Producer Grant (VAPG) is one of several grants and loans offered by USDA Rural Development, which has offices in every state (ours is in Bismarck and under state directorship of Ryan Taylor) and provides services to improve life in rural communities. The VAPG is for farmers like me who are taking the product they grow and changing it in some way that adds value, for example, turning strawberries into jam to sell. In my case I add value twice, first when I turn the wheat into flour, and again when I turn that flour into bread. You can learn more about the VAPG here:

I'm at the farm and am baking bread for my display at the NDFMGA conference tomorrow. Not only did I just mill all of my flour, but I reached into the fridge for an egg to put in the bread dough and found the egg was still warm from being underneath a chicken just minutes ago. This bread is FRESH!!

Wednesday night is baking night. Orders placed by 5:00pm today will be ready for pickup at DCB or delivery on Thursday and Friday. In addition to my usual offerings, I will also make Pumpkin Cranberry Bread, Gingerbread, Ginger cookies and Grandma B's Pfefferneuse Cookies (peppernuts) just for Christmas.

It's not too late to slip in a Thanksgiving bread order. I'll be baking herb cheese rolls, whole wheat dinner rolls, whole wheat flax bread and banana bread on Tuesday evening. Just let me know before 5pm on Tuesday and I can add your order to my batch.
