The Rhubarb Roundup

The Rhubarb Roundup We are a small farm & garden in Boulder, Wyoming just outside the Barger Subdivision.

Our greenhouse is made of up-cycled windows (given to us by Pinedale Glass). You can find us at the Pinedale Summer Farmers Market on Thursdays from 4pm-7pm. I won't be able to make all of them but will announce on this page when you can find us there. Things we are growing in 2013: swiss chard, kale, chives, Rhubarb, zucchini, carrots, kohlrabi, beets, radishes, turnips, lettuce. Since they are g

rown locally, a lot of our produce won't be ready until nearly the end of season. -- Things we have that are animals, or animal products, are: eggs (free-range), chicks (none in 2013 due to being out of town late into Spring, but will have them again in 2014), & rabbits (Californian - meat breed), beef steers (grass fed beef). -- I make aprons, seed sprouting muslin bags (for eating sprouts), quilts, double-fold cotton bias tape, & quilt kits (you put together). -- Other things I sell: seeds for sprouting (alfalfa & broccoli), dried bread crumble mix for seasoning poultry, dehydrated garden produce. Had a lot more for the garden planned in 2013 but a late frost took out half of it.

Since I haven't been doing the Farmers market lately, with new babies, we're off to donate rhubarb to the Sublette Center! Sue Eversull will be making it into desserts for the seniors. Day 1 : 21.1lbs.

Beef available! They are cutting today, should get it back early next week. About December 3rd or so. Grass fed, black angus steers. Younger. Hanging weights were lighter than we were thinking, so we're charging less on the beef quarters. Beef #1 was 274lbs on half. Beef #2 came out to 228lbs per half. So a quarter of Beef #1 will be $582.25 (INCLUDES butcher fees). A quarter of beef #2 will be $484.50, includes butcher fees.

7 Kids born between March 27th-April 15th (16 days). I've got 2 does that I know have kids in them.. but still waiting. One starting bagging up 3 days ago. The other (Gretta) I've felt hooves in.. a month ago, but still not bagging up. She's getting really big though... walks really slow.

I forgot to post this picture from March. I thought there would be a lot more babies this year but this was it and it all happened in March. The Boer buck we borrowed to cover the dairy does resulted in exactly 0 kids. Well, 1 dead full-term buckling to a first timer. He looked fine, so I'm guessing he didn't get cleaned off. :( But that buck didn't even get anything else bred. The only 2 kids I got were from breeding to our Alpine buck Stanley. Good looking kids! Each doe had 1 kid, both doelings. I had a new baby myself and never got out to dehorn. So they have horns. Cowsie had another bull calf, we steered him. He'll be a beef Fall 2018 or Spring 2019. Cowsie just went off today to be rebred with a Highland bull. The owner said Highlands get butchered at 3 years old because they are slower growing. If she got bred today she would calve in May. So a May or June baby for her next year. We lost one of the bottle calves over Winter, but Brute is doing well and gaining good on the pasture. We are actively seeking a Boer buck, or buckling, to breed our dairy does in the future for meat production. Will trade a good Boer buckling for 2 kids in the future! We are also looking for 12 tons of grass alfalfa mixed hay to feed to the steers and goats straight. Too much going on with having a baby to be mixing hay in a blizzard :D

-20f below here this morning. These two came inside for a warm up, hot molasses water, and some alfalfa pellets before being evicted out to the greenhouse for the day.

Yeah, that happened. There were 3 in there :)

A 5 # block of drained feta curds. Now cut, salted, and in the cheese cave! Made with 4 gallons of milk. A combined effort with a friend. Went to make ricotta but I totally did it in the wrong order and messed it up. Will get it right, next time.

First batch of cheese for the year. Feta and Chevre with garlic cloves and thyme. Feta won't be ready for a few days, but there isn't much left. The curds were very good :)

Note to myself. 50 # milk replacer =24 days. Estimate next 50 # to last 20 days. 2 calves

The bucks couldn't care less about the does a week ago. Now they stand outside their pen at night and lay next to their pasture all day. Grazing lost its joy. Rutt has begun. It would result in January kids, so it's not going to happen. 3 more months boys. It's funny listening to them and watching them. They've been play fighting for days. So funny when they're trying to impress the girls. Blubbering and just lots of weird noises.

Doeling on the left (brown and white) is Flopsy's doeling. Looks almost identical to Jazel except she has wattles. Then the red doe on the left I bought this year. Need a name for her. Maybe Peppy, or Wendy (thinking popular red-heads)

This is Gladise, Gretta's doe kid from last year. Another sweetie. Will be breeding her this Winter to Ezra.
