National Honey Bee Day 2026 is being celebrated today, Saturday, August 15, 2026. Also widely known as World Honey Bee Day, this annual event takes place across the US on the third Saturday of August to honor honey bees, recognize the dedication of local beekeepers, and raise public awareness about the vital role pollinators play in our global food security and ecosystems.

"Honey bee washboarding" is a fascinating, rhythmic behavior where worker bees line up on the hive's exterior and rock back and forth, dragging their front legs and mandibles against the surface. Often seen on warm afternoons, the exact purpose remains a mystery, though beekeepers and researchers suspect it aids in cleaning, polishing, or scent-marking the hive.

I like these pictures…. Seeing different nectar sources on the same frame is a completely normal and fascinating behavior known as "banding" or "multi-floral patterning." This occurs because honey bees are highly opportunistic foragers who adapt to changing floral blooms, filling available honeycomb cells over time.The visual contrast on the frame is primarily driven by how, when, and where the bees store these distinct nectars.

Why you ask? Honey bees typically build and fill a frame from the top down or the outside in. If one major plant (like light black locust) finishes blooming and another plant (like dark tulip poplar) starts blooming days later, the bees will backfill the remaining open cells with the new, distinctly colored.
