Updates on the farm and house build since June 2023
Hey! It’s been a while since we updated with written content. Mostly we have stuck with videos which has been fun and required less mental work. We figured it was time 463 days later to maybe write a detailed update.
Towards the end of 2023 we had rearranged most of our house plans- we tend to do this on a regular basis because we’re designing as we go. We designed our master bedroom and on the same wall but opposite side We placed a large wood burning stove. Thankfully this was done before the extreme cold months because the house sure was more comfortable.
We sealed in the house that winter with all walls complete and a garage door. The only thing left is insulation.
Now it’s November 2024 and we’re finally at the point we can have the kitchen, living room/library, master bedroom, work out room, family closet and upstairs bathroom insulated.
Summer 2024 we decided to move the kitchen from upstairs to downstairs, taking about 1/2 of the garage but leaving lots of space for Nick to tinker and build.
The downstairs pantry and bathroom will swap rooms. This gives easier egress from the front door, the mudroom then through the pantry to the kitchen. There’s also a back door to the kitchen from the outside.
We figured it would be a nice gathering place without everyone having to go through the living spaces which is always messy because… 6-10 people at a time live here. Also groceries being carried up stairs is the worst.
We still have some rearranging, finalizing and decorating to do, but we’re so much closer to our final product.
That’s the house update!
Insulating the upstairs and kitchen and then we will tackle the master bedroom, living room, bathroom, Russell’s loft bedroom and then the yellow and last shipping container. Right now it’s just the storage building.
Once finished we will have: UPSTAIRS- 5 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, large family closet with washing machine. Large living room/library, 3rd floor loft, and large balcony.
Downstairs: Mudroom, pantry, full-bathroom, kitchen, garage, guest bedroom, storage.
Farm.
The summer of 2024 proved to be a loss for chickens- our set up just didn’t bode well with it. This was the first year we had to buy chicken eggs and it felt so weird.
The pigs did well and we had a farrowing of piglets which all sold.
In September Like a miracle we met Allison and her son James. Allison brings years of construction and homesteading experience.
They quickly helped whip us into shape and provided excellent child care so we could work.
It’s been really fun having that community type experience. Learning and achieving more goals by just having that extra help.
The chicken coop and run was finished, the pigs have a new paddock space, clutter and junk has been hauled off, hundreds of lbs of compost has been bagged, shoveled into wheel barrows and placed into the garden.
The ducks have their space and their fertilizer whirlpool bath has worked out well with their ramp.
We’re in the process of making a bunny house and acquiring meat rabbits.
Selling off the red heeler puppies and 7 piglets from this falls farrowing, doing this helps bring in some revenue to the farm.
We’re busy and we’re stretched, but we’re happy and enjoying the homestead life.
If you made it this far thanks for sticking around to read about our crazy world. Hope to have y’all visit this year!
Love y’all,
7L Farms Family,
