The Nutty Grandma Homestead

The Nutty Grandma Homestead The Nutty Grandma homestead is a Wisconsin-based permaculture farm (or "food forest") that will someday produce fruit, berries, leafy greens, tubers, and nuts.

Follow us to watch the forest develop and see what tasty things are growing!

This week's accomplishment: two more honeyberries in the ground, and while I was at it, I mulched the whole kit and caboodle, so now all five are properly protected from w**d encroachment. Several of them are forming berries, so I hope I get to taste my first honeyberry this year :)

I have really exciting news! There are signs of life! After attempting twice to transplant a 3-5 foot grafted shagbark hickory (both died), last year I grew a few from the nuts I collected, then transplanted two little baby seedlings into the yard last fall. At least this one seems to have survived - it is showing some leaves! Hope springs eternal

Adding more critter-resistant perennials to the edge of the main path through the forest garden. Planted daffodils, anise hyssop and oregano last year and this year I added sweet william and creeping phlox (among other things).

Martin Crawford emphasizes the importance of maintaining edges in his book Creating a Forest Garden, and I'm seeing how true that is. In the places where I have neither mulched around this edge bed nor dug a trench or swale, the grass just invades the bed! Mulching and digging along this edge will be a main project this year, both to protect the edge bed and to define the line where the path ends and the forest garden begins.

The Nutty Grandma has been very busy planting and mulching! In these pics, I am transplanting elderberries using the expanding edge technique by sheet mulching in strips. I pulled the strip I laid down last fall 6 feet to the right, put in the elderberries, then re-mulched where the first strip had been (until I am ready to put in groundcovers).

Last week I was able to finish the row of seaberries that form a windbreak for the forest garden. Had planted 4 of these shrubs two years ago and now there are 9 more in the ground. The ones from two years ago are starting to leaf out.
Seaberries are nitrogen-fixing shrubs that are very hardy and produce a "superfood" berry full of antioxidants. Can't wait to try some when they produce their first berries!

Today I put this bare-root "Big Golden Star" Hawthorn from Raintree Nursery into the ground. It's thornless whereas most other hawthorns are very thorny.
Fun fact: Hawthorns can live for over 250 years!

This is a rare and special find when I see one of these cuties on the farmstead! Of course, this salamander was hiding underneath something I was removing from the base of a bush. 🥰
