We’ve got a new farm for the cows to graze and improve! We’re starting with doing some bale grazing to add some organic matter and biology to the sandy soil. Once the cattle have made their way through and laid down a mat of hay and manure we’ll plant some cover crops to keep the plant community growth vigorous, and keep the a living root in the soil as much as possible.

While moving the cows I noticed another fantastic example of epigenetics / genetic expression. The first cow was not born in our system, was raised under different inputs and stressors, and as you can see in the 1st and second picture has some fly load on her.

The 3rd and 4th picture show a cow that is actually the daughter of the first cow, but was born on our farm and raised in our system, without chemical inputs. She is nearly fly free! Some of this comes from her sire (the bull) but also from her ability to perform better on purely forage and resist external parasites due to being grown in utero and raised in a system that doesn’t use chemical means to reduce fly pressure.

Same field, same pasture, same forage, same day, but different cattle. Manure is a key indicator of animal performance, and here’s proof of two animals performing very differently. The cattle are on rough forage rn and now is when we see be separation between the halves and the halve nots. The animal that left the first picture is getting adequate protein and energy from the forage she’s eating while the second is struggling. The animals who were raised on this rougher forage since they were in the womb have proven to perform significantly better once the natives start to lose their quality toward the end of the growing season. This difference is a great example of epigenetic impact and expression.

Same mom, same dad, but conceived and born into 2 very different forage systems.

The home farm is bloom in areas that have received the most rest. Without adequate rest, plants won’t be able to put out all these beautiful blooms. No blooms means no beneficial insect attraction, and overall less beauty on the farm. Not to mention the cows love to eat the blossoms too.

We’re in the process of building a new chicken/turkey shelter to give them a bit more head room and make it easier on us to go in and out of. Utilizing old billboard tarps makes for interesting decor in the fields….😂
