🎄 Christmas trees aren’t just for Christmas at Reindeer Acres! 🦌

Throughout the year, we place Christmas trees in our reindeer pens as a form of enrichment and stimulation. They give the herd something new to investigate, rub against, nibble on, and interact with while encouraging natural behaviors.

And this time of year, those trees become especially useful! As we reach the end of summer and the cooler days of fall begin creeping closer, our reindeer are shedding the velvet from their antlers. So you’ll often see the reindeer rubbing their antlers on trees and other objects to help remove it.

So while it may look a little strange to see Christmas trees in August, around here they’re part enrichment, part scratching post, and very much reindeer-approved. 🎄🦌

Besides, at Reindeer Acres, is it ever really too early for Christmas? ✨

Last night, Calvin’s antlers were still completely covered in velvet.

By morning… almost all of it was gone. 🦌🎄

After Dancer’s velvet-shedding video reached more than ONE MILLION views, two questions kept coming in from people around the world: Does it hurt? And does it itch?

Calvin decided to give us the perfect opportunity to answer both.

Watch as he uses his Christmas tree to help remove the last of his velvet, and learn what’s actually happening as a reindeer’s antlers finish growing, harden, and prepare for the fall rut.

One of the most incredible transformations our reindeer go through every year at Reindeer Acres.

Meet Jack Frost! ❄️🐮

There’s a new face joining the magic at Reindeer Acres this Christmas, and we have a feeling he’s going to steal a few hearts.

Jack Frost is our new Mini Highland, and he is every bit as gentle and adorable as he looks. With that fluffy coat, sweet personality, and unmistakable Highland charm, Jack is settling right into life at Reindeer Acres.

This Christmas, guests will have the chance to meet Jack Frost during their visit, along with Santa’s real reindeer and all the Christmas magic waiting around the farm.

We can’t wait for you to meet him! 🎄✨

Dinner time with the herd. 🦌🌾

The girls are now in with Dancer, and rut is officially underway.

Watching this video, he looks perfectly calm. He’s eating dinner, hanging out with the girls, and looking pretty darn handsome while doing it.

But looks can be deceiving.

Dancer is a mature bull in rut, which means his behavior can change very quickly. From now until rut is over, feeding this group is a two-person job. One person feeds while the other keeps eyes on Dancer at all times.

You’ll also notice that we keep our backs toward the open door and gate. That’s intentional. We always have a clear escape route and never allow ourselves to get boxed in.

He may calmly eat his dinner and never give us a second glance. We hope he does. But when working around a bull in rut, you prepare for what could happen, not just what you see happening right now.

So while this video looks like a peaceful dinner at Reindeer Acres, there’s a whole lot of awareness happening behind the camera. ❤️🦌

Dancer is beautiful, powerful, and very much a bull in rut. He gets our respect, our attention, and plenty of space.

🎅🏻🤶🏻🧝✨ CHRISTMAS PERFORMERS DAY IS BACK! ✨🦌

Four years ago, we invited Santas, Mrs. Clauses, elves, and Christmas performers to Reindeer Acres for something a little different: an afternoon together, professional Christmas photos, and of course, photos with real reindeer.

Last year, construction and the major remodeling of our Guest Center and reindeer stables made it impossible to hold the event. But this year, Christmas Performers Day is BACK for our third gathering! 🎄

And we love that it’s becoming a tradition for Christmas performers from across Wisconsin and Minnesota.

We’ll have a professional photographer, several of our Christmas sets, and real Reindeer Acres reindeer available for photos.

Come dressed and ready, or bring your wardrobe with you! Changing areas will be available inside our Guest Center.

This is also a chance to spend an afternoon with fellow performers before the craziness of the Christmas season begins. Catch up with old friends, meet some new ones, swap stories, and enjoy Reindeer Acres without a few hundred guests wandering around. 😂🎅

Every year, the season changes almost overnight.

Dancer has started rubbing the velvet from his antlers, which means one thing… rut is here. Over the next few days, the girls will be moved into his pasture, and he’ll begin preparing for the breeding season.

The red you see isn’t an injury. It’s completely natural. The velvet has finished its job, the antlers are now solid bone, and they’ve gone cold with no feeling. As Dancer rubs away the last of the velvet, his antlers will gradually bleach in the sun until they become the beautiful ivory color we all recognize at Christmastime.

While he’s stunning to look at, this is also the time of year when a bull reindeer becomes extremely protective and unpredictable. For everyone’s safety, Dancer’s pasture is now off-limits to our staff until rut is over.

Some of nature’s greatest beauty is best admired from a respectful distance.

Three incredible days. 🦌

It’s hard to put into words how grateful we are to have had Nick Morrow at Reindeer Acres.

Nick is a world-renowned animal trainer whose experience spans everything from reindeer and yaks to giraffes and even hippos. Over the past three days, he took Dasher and Comet from never having pulled before to confidently working side by side in harness and being driven.

His patience, knowledge, and ability to understand animal behavior are truly remarkable. We learned more in these three days than we ever imagined possible, and the foundation has been laid for something we’ve dreamed about for years.

One day soon, guests at Reindeer Acres will glide through our snow-dusted woods behind a team of real reindeer, creating memories they’ll never forget.

Thank you, Nick, for sharing your passion, your expertise, and for helping bring this dream one giant step closer to reality. We can’t wait to share what comes next. ❤️🎄
