Shroeder Shearing

Shroeder Shearing Shroeder Shearing provides kind and gentle shearing services for alpacas, llamas, sheep, and goats. Remove fiber in an efficient and professional manner.

Shroeder Shearing is a service started by Anne Shroeder in 2004. As a small flock owner, I discovered it was difficult to find shearers to shear my animals and so decided to dedicate myself to learning the craft. I currently shear for upwards of 400 farms each year – the flock sizes range from 1 to 100. I shear sheep, alpacas, goats, and llamas, and also do hoof trimming and (for camelids) tooth t

rimming. My primary goals:

Treat your animals with care and respect. I partner with experienced livestock assistants who are polite to humans and gentle with animals. A portion all proceeds of the shearing go to benefit Star Gazing Farm Animal Sanctuary.

Elliott, Eli, and Edgar. Incredibly cute angoras. I’ve been shearing at this farm for 8 years now.

There are some animals who simply stay with you. This llama is named Grayson. 12 years ago I was called out to shear him. He was deemed dangerous and impossible to handle. Of course, that made me absolutely determined to win him over. And I did. Llamas are very special. They are powerful and can really hurt you, but they are also often quite nervous and sensitive.

I had not seen Grayson for five years, but was called out again to take care of him last weekend. It took a while for him to stop trembling. In previous years, apparently he had been hog tied on a mat, alpaca-style, which apparently was terrifying to him. At first glance, he is not someone you really want to mess with.

This is a llama whom no one ever touches. He lives at a fancy place as a decoration (as far as I can tell). But I’ve always liked him. In the end, he let me shear him, stroke his neck, and generally have my way with him! As we were leaving, he ran down to the other end of the pasture… and smiled at us - at least I think he was smiling. I see a lot of animals in the course of one year, but taking care of this particular llama again really made me happy.

This is Amos. Amos is so dearly loved by his person - makes my heart glad to see. Sheep DO adore massages. I’m dismayed when I hear “oh, it’s just a sheep. They don’t feel pain the same way.” If they can feel pleasure, then surely they experience pain. Sheep are so underrated for their ability to be happy and to cause happiness. We were smiling all day after meeting Mr. Amos.

I love that in my job it’s perfectly normal to have a cow just hanging out outside my truck window.

Every once in a while I flash back to living all day in a grey cubicle chained to a chair and shudder. I got pretty badly beat up today by some sheep but even so I still love this work.

I love Soay sheep. They’re tiny- 20-30 pounds - and feral. Their faces hearken back to ancient times.

These Valais sheep are crazy. Their wool grows out-of-control fast. This guy had so much wool on his belly I couldn’t find his p*e p*e. And so much wool on his face, I couldn’t find his eyes.

Yes, they are cute. But I fear that the marketing blitz has overtaken things. They are wildly expensive (thousands of $$) and yet their wool is really only carpet wool. They are friendly, ordinarily, but I find them quite difficult to shear, partly because of their horns and floppy ears and extremely short noses, but mostly because they are enormous, and their legs are really long … and they’re not particularly cooperative.

I always feel sad when people fall for the animal fads like the babydoll sheep and the miniature highland cows. Somebody is making a large amount of money off of folks who are buying animals who are nice … but not any nicer than other animals. Just because something is expensive doesn’t mean it is superior.

Presto! Naked! Two of these three boys gave me quite the run around. Hmm… any guesses who the nice guy was?
