Snow storms & maxi pads
We returned to Michigan early this year, leaving behind sunny Colorado and its endless string of 70-degree days. The first week back greeted us with bright northern Michigan skies—and then a forecast for the biggest blizzard since 1977.
I immediately remembered a vivid childhood memory: the blizzard of ’77. I was about 8 years old, living in Howell, Michigan. In the midst of the storm, my father and I walked to town—those five or six blocks felt like miles—to fetch essentials and lunch from a local diner. Lunch was hot soup, and the essentials? Maxipads for my mom. On the first block of our trek home, a gust of wind ripped the grocery bag from my dad’s arms, sending the box tumbling down the street. We chased it down, laughing the whole way home, proudly delivering the tattered package to my mom.

This storm, I’m hunkered down in our Michigan home, labeling goods for the upcoming summer at the Horton Bay General Store. I hope you’re all tucked in somewhere warm today, with your essentials in hand.

Live slow,
Molly McCoy & Greg Cummings

CILANTRO!

We talk about how serendipity strikes ALL THE TIME at the general store. This year before even opening, my organic farm dreams started to come true! A neighbor in Horton Bay, is also farming nearby using organic methods and growing the most delicious herbs, greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, flowers and the list goes on. During a visit to the farm earlier this week, you could hardly pull me away from the cilantro patch. I'm clearly not in the 10% of the population that cilantro tastes like soap. It was the most fresh, flavorful cilantro I have ever tasted and the same with the greens.

This summer we'll serve as an extension of Entrusted Earth's market set up. So, if you miss the farmers market, you can pick up fresh produce at the general store. Much of it will be harvested the morning it's brought to the store! Keep current on what's fresh in stock on Facebook and Instagram. In store now, Spring Mix ($6/bag), cucumbers ($2), herbs (cilantro, chives and mint, $3/bunch). We'll be having salad with dinner tonight!

Feeling like the luckiest farmer girl wanna be!

The small town of Horton Bay is located on the north side of Lake Charlevoix and it’s where a young Ernest Hemingway liked to hang out. I can see why with its beautiful northern Michigan scenery and the old general store in town. If you are near Lake Charlevoix I highly recommend taking a trip around the lake, there are some interesting places to see and things to do.
