Got some peas in yesterday just before the big storm! We are trying a new series highlighting the many tools we use on our farm so that you can see the behind the scenes of small scale farming! This week’s tool is our Earthway seeder: this little seeder is a great tool for some of our smaller scale crops. It drops seed and covers it at as it rolls over top, making it a quick process if you’re just planting a couple rows like we do with peas. Feel free to DM us with questions about processes or aspects you want to learn more about and we’ll make a video!

Weeds are up so it was time to do some tillage which was a first for me in February 🙃 As organic farmers our methods for killing weeds are limited, and we need to take every opportunity we can get. The implement used here is called an S-tine, which is a tool we use often for lower-intensity shallow tillage. The S-tine does a good job of disturbing small weeds on the surface without digging deep and impacting our soil structure. Killing these weeds early is imperative to preventing further seed production and the germination of another generation. It’s a fine balance between killing weeds and preserving the integrity of our soil, and we try to strike it as best we can!
